Gasket material for hydraulics

All,

I need to make up some new gaskets for the hydraulics on a '50 C -- between the pump and the engine block, between the pump and the transfer lines, and between the transfer lines and the resevoir. What's the appropriate gasket material to use? I suppose it needs to be setup for high pressure and high temp, right?

My local Checker's has a synthetic cork-like material plus something else that's grey and feels like paper.

Also...any particular sort of gasket sealant that I should use? (I suspect that sticky purple stuff I'm using other places is too soft for the high pressures...)

Many thanks,

- David

David: Even without knowing the specifics of the application, I'd steer clear of cork. Cork is mainly used for low-pressure applications, and probably will not hold up under even the modest pressures of an older hydraulic system. The "grey paper" is more than likely a lower-grade gasket sheet with a nitrile rubber binder. This should hold up (from a chemical compatibility standpoint) to hydraulic fluid, but may also give problems under elevated pressures due to low tensile strength. However, it's probably the better choice of the two you mentioned. Be wary of using sealant on a hydraulic system--if you put too much on, it can extrude into the sealed cavity, break loose, and clog your system.

O-rings seal the lines to the pump. Why don't you just get the other two gaskets from Case-IH, they are cheap and made out of the right material. I wouldn't use sealant around hydraulics, the right gaskets won't leak.

david, I don't know about the C but IH was common to use O rings on some of these connections and no gasket.

I would lean towards the gray paper type you described. Cork won't hold up to high pressures as well as the paper. My favorite sealant is permatex high tack. It comes in a bottle with an applicator brush. I use it for just about everything.
