Just picked up a Farmall A that has had original seat and brackets removed. Clutch housing has 8638 DE forged in it. Any ideas as to finding out the year? Thanks ahead of time!!

On the right side of the block just below #1 spark plug is a flat machined spot. It will have the engines serial number stamped in it. This usually matches the tractors serial number. Then just click on the "Serial Numbers" link to the left of this page. It gives you the starting serial number for each year.

But, if it's like my A, the spot on the engine will be blank, indicating a replacement block. The number you cited is a part number. You may be able to find some casting dates on major parts like the clutch houseing-torque tube. Look on page 11 of "Letter Series Tractors" by Guy Fay for help.

I've got the same problem and am having trouble finding casting codes, but I'm not to the point where I've cleaned the cast parts well enough to see the codes; they are not apparent anyway.
