Hi Guys,

I'm looking to get a set of original rear rims for my '39 Farmall A. Right now I've got one newer style rim on one side and a repaired original on the other. My question is did the design of the rear rims change during production from 1939 to 1946 or were they all the same 4 bolt type that used the square head bolt? I know the newer styles use a carriage head bolt instead of the square head bolt, but I don't know if this newer design was incorporated during the production run or afterwards as a service part. Anybody know?

thanks,
bob

Ihave the original types there were several types of the brackets used in the production run. All used the square nead bolts. Most of the rims were made by GOODYEAR and the name is stamped on the inside. What width do you want 7 or 8 in. The new aftermarket ones avail now will use a carriage bolt and the loops are not of the original type. I have a great pair of the original type they are 7in.

Bob: The only IH original bolt I have seen used on the entire production from 39 A to the 79 140 was the square head bolt. A hex head will work, just no way of stopping bolt head from turning. I have an after market rim on my Super A which can acomodate either a square or hex head machine bolt. The after market rims do not incorperate any system of holding the bolt head while tightening wheel nuts. I have never seen any system using a carriage bolt. I can however see the the after market rims being designed for a carriage bolt. The way in which the one I have is designed it would have been very easy to incorperate the use of a carriage bolt. As there is more than one supplier of after market rims I wouldn't want to question what you are seeing. But definately not IH.

It is my understanding that the square head bolt type rim was the only one used during production. The carrage bolt type came along after the production ended and are what is available now.

Check further because I am not dead sure about this.

I do know that AC used yet another method of attaching the wheel to the rim. It was a wedge and cam bolt arrangement. The wheels are the same but the rims are different.

GOOD LUCK

Origionally the right side was cast and the other side steel to help balance out the offset motor.
Not sure about the bolt holes.
It has been several years since I fooled with an A. Hope to get another one soon though.

Bob, I cant answer your whole question, but I can tell you that on both my 42 A and 49 Super A both tractors use the square head bolts and mate with the recepticals riveted to the rims. Hope this helps.
