Started the F 20 for the first time, but no oil pressure. All lines were unrestricted, so I dropped the oil pump out. What do I need to check on this. What part of the pump would fail?

I checked mine by putting it into a bucket of oil and turning the shaft by hand to see if oil came up. If its pumping maybe the gasket didn't seal between the block and pump. also there is a relief valve in the pump that could be stuck open, some have these valves, some don't.

Is it the oil pump or the gauge? You can remove the oil pressure gauge and verify that the port is clear of gunk. You can take the valve cover off and see if has been getting oil up on top. If you have the pan off you could drop the bearing caps and make sure they have a good film of oil before starting it up again. May even squirt some oil in through the spark plug holes to lubricate the rings/cylinder walls. As long as everything has a good film of oil you could start it up with the valve cover off. You should see a small amount of oil coming out around the rocker arms, etc.

Oil on top? A F-20 is oiled on top by pouring oil into trays for the rocker arms. Pan off? It would be easier to remove the side plates and look than removing the oil pan. That can even be done with engine running.

I don't think you will see oil coming out around the rocker arm shaft, on the F-20,you have to oil the rockers by hand through the oil caps on top of the valve cover. as for the rods, they are dipper type, if you have oil in the dipper troff you have oil pressure. He may have to pack the pump with light grease like on the GM products with the fromt mounted oil pumps.

I have had the gauge out when it started. Nothing came out.

toot, put the pump in a bucket and turn the shaft with your fingers. I don't think you need to turn it all that fast to pump oil. could be the keyway sheared on the shaft or gear. they are a pretty simple pump. If you need something I have several extras.
