460 diesel - problems

I purchased a 460 diesel this spring. I used it once early this spring to help pull a stranded vehicle and prep and plant oats. Very good runner.

I was wanting to restore it so I took it to a mechanic to replace a leaky head gasket and he discovered 3 sleeves were broken in a major way. The tractor had sat most of this summer and he could not believe it started up and ran in it's condition.

Not having a lot of knowledge of 460 diesels (or IH), I need to know if rebuilding or scrapping are the two options I have or is there something else??

Thanks for the input.

Several years ago my Dad and I over hauled our 460D the sleeves went in loose. 7or8 years down the road one sleeve wound up in the oil pan all the holes were egg shaped had to have the holes bored and put in over size sleeves. A couple of years later pto went out of my 756D I was pulling 12ft. N H haybine and 605F veemer baler with 460 and raking with 756. Had the chance to put it on a Dino right after that was turning 64 hp at 540rpm.

If you decide to scrap it out and not fix it, I would be interested in the tractor.

The d236 and the d282 sleves did not fit tight new so rebuild and use loctite or aluminum paint will work.

I'd say rebuild and restore. The D-236 is not an expensive engine to work on, and nothing looks better than a 60 series with brand new paint.

I agree with the look of a 60 series, but I also am dealing with other projects and did not anticipate this. The last time this tractor was rebuilt was 1979 - 80, kitted with a 560 crank. Not sure if they repaced the connecting rods.

I would think a complete tear down would be in order to check for any damage of the block and that is where is gets expensive, cam grind, pump and injector rebuild, clutch - on top of the overhaul kit.

What's it worth in it's present condition, NF, wheel weights, fast hitch and all the trimmings - as is?

460 and 560 used the same rods. just different pistons and crank. restored mine a couple of years ago and made the 460 into a 560. I would take it to a machine shop and have them bore it to take the oversize sleeves. It might already be at the oversize and someone just put in the standard sleeves. Mine had 4 of the 6 cracked because they were loose.

The price not sure but I paid 1000 for mine running. Needed major overhaul after I started to tear into it. I would say 800-1000 depending on the rest of the tractor.

In its present condition with a known major engine problem (especially if its apart and not running) about all its worth is salvage-in my area about $300 to $550 unless the rear tires are good, then add a little for that. If you decide to overhaul it, make sure you retain the paperwork and get the hour meter working. A lot of people (me included) are very leery of the "just overhauled" claim when a tractor is being sold.
