am restoring a 1946 A distillate tractor. My problem is that it idles rough. It runs fine under a load, but idles rough. Have replaced carb. and gasket, manifold gasket, and plugs. No amount of carb adjusting seems to smooth it out. It's not extremely bad, but it doesn't seeem quite right.I have noticed that the manifold is different than that on a standard gas A. Instead of a round tube leading from the carb., it is squared off above the carb. Could this type manifold be part of the problem? I'm new at this, and any help would be great.

I recommend getting an I&T tractor repair manuel from a caseih dealer or Tractor Supply. Extremely helpful on determining spec's. Has a section about adjusting the governor to smooth out rough idling and for setting high no-load RPM's. Hope this helps.

How are the valve adjustments ? As Dave indicated lets eliminate all of the standard stuff before we get into the odd stuff.

Changed wires. Seems to have helped some. Tractor originally had magneto.Mag and distributor seem to be one unit. Mag must have gone bad, someone unplugged from magneto and installed a coil in its place. Are ther any points, and if so where? Pulled the rotor button off expecting to see points underneath. Didn't find any.

It has been many years, but the points might have a cover over them under the rotor button. My 2444 does and I think my neighbors super a did as well, but then that was back when I still had hair on my head :)

nOPE, NO POINTS UNDER ROTOR BUTTON. THERE IS A METAL PLATE ABOUT 11/2" DIAMETER WITH 2 SCREWS IN IT, BUT THAT HOLDS THE END OF THE ROTOR IN. tHIS IS A MAGNETO SETUP THAT SOMEONE MODIFIED. SOMEONE ADDED A COIL TO THE SYSTEM AT SOME POINT.HAVE PRICED NEW MAGNETOS, AND WOULD RATHER NOT BUY ONE UNLESS I HAVE TO.

Points are in front of the piece that has the clips that holds the dist cap on. This is the "distributer" part of the mag. Do not remove the gears inside the 1 1/2 inch plate you referred to!
