ON MY PTO SHAFT ON THE BACK OF MY H THERE IS A SHORT ADAPTER LIKESHAFT. IT HAS 2 GREASE FITTINGS.
IT HAS THE SAME SPLINES AS THE H SPLINES. IT IS ABOUT 6 INCHES LONG. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THIS IS FOR. IT HAS A LOT OF
PLAY IN IT. I THINK IT IS WORN OUT. IT COUSES MY
BUSH HOG PTO SHAFT TO RATTLE BECOUSE THERE IS TO MUCH PLAY IN IT. CAN I TAKE IT OFF AND JUST HOOK MY PTO SHAFT DIRECT TO MY TRACTOR OR
WILL THIS HURT THE PTO SHAFT ON MY TRACTOR ?
THANKS.

It sounds like it is an overriding clutch as other post indicated. Is the "play" in it in the normal direction of rotation or the override part? To remove it you need to take out the greese fittings. It is held on by a roll pin that goes through the pto shaft so you need to line it up so you can drive out the pin. Similarily when you put it back the pin needs to be pushed in far enough so the overriding clutch will work.

Actually, I have never seen one, but other posts on this board indicate you have an overrunning clutch, which "disconnects" the pto shaft from the bush hog when you push in the clutch. Your H does not have a live pto, meaning when you push in the clutch the spinning blades on the bush will push the tractor through the transmission, a somewhat dangerous situation. You should replace it, but the pto will work fine without it, but be careful. Available at farm stores, or perhaps your Case-IH dealer.
