followup on first oil change for '66 cub

I got home today at about 5:30 after taking care of some business in town, and decided to go get started servicing the cub. Oil change went well.. filter wasn't even too bad.. ended up getting a fram C235.. I managed to cross the IH number on the fram website. Our local TSC store only caries fram filters.. and the local napa / carquest were closed today, as well as the case/ih dealer in town.. so i was stuck with tractor supply. Had time left over, so I serviced the tranny, and the steering box, and the oil bath hub on the fan, oil cup on breather, etc. Greased all fittings, then started to look for the final drive drain fill ports. By this time it had gotten dark, and I was working by barn lights, and was having a heck of a time finding the fill/drain ports as indicated in the owners manual.. then it struck me that the belly mower attatchments were probably covering it up. A quick look with a flashlight onthe left side showed an inverted threaded plug.. where I had been looking for a standard square plug like the tranny and steering box had.

Tomorrow after work, I'll go drop the belly mower and the drawbar, and hopefully the right side will be evident.. as I couldn't see the plug on that side either..

Any helpfull hints? I take it the plugs are not in the same exact location ( as the left ) on the right side?

Also need to do the radiator tomorrow as well, and the genny oil cup.. then she'll be good to go.

One last question. I'm guessing the pto gears are in the same oil sump as the tranny.. so iwas wondering why there was a grease fitting that looks like it is for the pto output shaft.. shouldn't that seal/bearing be lubricated by the tranny oil?

Thanks all. and as usual, comments or tips are greatly appreciated. I'm glad I finally got the manual.. I've been wanting to service this machine for 2 weeks now so that I can start using her.. but didn't want to work her untill completely serviced.... glad I waited.. oil was dark.. but didn't seem too gas thinned.

New 30wt oil popped up the oil pressure a bit too... that was welcome.

First, a belated welcome to this list. It's nice to see you giving your Cub the same careful servicing you give to your Fords.

As you have already found, the final drives are not mirror images, but really are the same castings. One filler is in front, and the other is in the rear. There is no drain plug...you must remove the pan to change the lube. Best to get new gaskets before you do so.

The zerk on the PTO can be confusing. Normally, the rear bearing is lubed by oil that is splashed around by the gears. The zerk is there to provide a way to lube the bearing when the tractor is used for stationary power using the belt pulley attachment and the gears are not moving.

Well after work today, I set out to finish the job. I dropped the drawbar and the belly mower ( no small task ) and changed the oil in both final drives.... Hope 500 hours goes a long way... that was a bit of a task with the belly mower.. pullies and all.. not much room to work, especially considdering they were all 16/16ths bolts holding everything on, and my socket wrench was too big to get the socket on, next to the pulley... adjustable wrench was too big to get much more than a 1 facing turn.. ended up using the 2' breaker bar, and getting about 1/4 to 1/2 turn on the bolt each time...

Thank goodness for tractor jacks... I think I paid 34 bucks for mine.. and seem to use it every week...

And yes.. I love to take care of my machinery.. no matter who makes it. When I did my big service day a few weeks ago, I managed to get all 3 of the fords done, and my riding lawnmower and push mower... preventative maintenance is cheaper than repair bills.

Thanks for confirming what I was already thinking. So I will have to remove the drawbar and the belly mower mounts to get to the final drives.

I actually got the cub about 3 weeks ago.. but didn't get the manual I ordered.. it just came in last thursday. I read the cub sections straight thru.

The lubrication guide was fairly complete.. though the drawings didn't really indicate that the diff fittings were in different areas on each side.. just said "both sides".

Yep.. I read the part about the pans, and have everything ready to go.. Just ran out of light last night to work effectively.. and then I was also a little unsure about the drain/fill location anyway, so didn't want to tear into it blindly, as late as it was.

Now I understand about the grease fitting at the pto. If it is in neutral, the tranny isn't slinging oil everywhere.

I love this little tractor and look forward to using it a bunch. It steers so easy, and I can get places my larger tractors cant, and have been having to mow with the rider, etc.

Sounds like you're having fun now. I have not got to my final drives yet. Still tuning things up after new rings etc...Have you been in to set up the valve clearances? Pretty easy job and worth checking into. Also I found a great improvement checking the governor to throttle linkage set-up as out-lined by the manual. My '49 is almost 20 years older than yours tho, so you should have a pretty good machine. I'm looking at picking up a '67 this fall to work on for the winter. I'm curious myself about the tranny/PTO lube system, I can't give you any educated answers, but maybe some others can shed light on for both of us.

This baby starts on the first crank.. no choke. I wish my fords did that.

I guess if I have time tonight I'll get to the final drives.
