I recently purchased a W6 in great shape however I keep killing batteries after several hours of run time.....Someone mentioned I had hooked the battery up wrong, and that it was a "positive ground" (Meaning that the ground cable should be hooked to the positive terminal and the live positive cable should be hooked to the ground terminal on the battery) Is this true?? And also is a SuperW6 with a Torque amplifier considered rare?

Thanks for your help
Dave

Speaking to the SW-6-TA. There were just over 3000 of them built all in 1954.

Dave - Sounds like your generator is not charging the battery. Punch below for a troubleshooting chart that will help figure out where the problem is.

Regarding ground polarity, your tractor as originally supplied was positive ground (battery + terminal connected to ground). However it'll run/charge the battery just fine set up for negative ground (battery - terminal connected to ground) so long as the generator has been repolarized and the wires reversed at the ammeter.

The Super W6-TA is not exactly a common tractor, however there are a few of them around. I saw a nicely restored example on display at the Hamlin NY show last weekend.

I all is set up correctly, connecting the battery either positive or negative ground will work. However, I expect the W-6 was originally positive ground. You don't say if you have battery ignition or a magneto or if you have original 6 volt generator or has been converted to a 12 volt alternator. However, it sounds as though your generator is not charging the battery and your ignition is running the battery down after a time. Things to check. Does your amp gage show charge?? If you have a generator, is it correctly polarized. If you have a generator and it does not show charge on the ammeter, then you can check the generator by grounding the field terminal (carefull not to ground anything else) With the field terminal of the generator grounded you should get max charge rate of around 10 to 15 amps if you have the original generator. If you don't, likely the regulator or the cut out relay is bad. Hope this helps.

I would be looking at the voltage regulor to see if it is over charging.

There is no such thing as a "ground terminal on a battery". The terminal tied to ground (chassis or common) by a cable becomes the ground point of the system and it can be either positive or negative. As to a W-6, I don't know which battery terminal was connected to the ground cable in an original system, but expect it was the negative terminal.
