Ring difference Question?

I recently put new rings in my C to stop it from smoking so much. Along with that I had a valve job on the head and put in new bearings on the pistions. Its smokes the same, even more sometimes. There is only difference that I have found in the rings. The thrid ring or the oil scraping ring is a different type than the one I took off. The orignal was a band with small slits in it. The new ones looks like a W pattern. They allow more oil in than the band because the band was solid, and the new ones are not. The two upper rings fit good and are spaced not to allow oil by. I did hone the sleeves and I think they are okay, but don't know what to look for on bad ones. Anyone have any ideas on what I should do or what to replace.

Did you check the sleeve for out-of-round, the piston skirt clearance, and the ring end gap? These may be excessive, and if so, the rings will not seal correctly.

How do you check those three things? The tractor did have a blown head gasket when we got it and they ran it some time with it blown because they though that it was just burning oil. Could that wrap the sleeves or damage them in any way.
