I am ready to replace the gasket between the lift all section and the tranny on my '40 H.

This looks like a MAJOR job. Is it? Also, can you give advice on what jacks / supports I might need to do it?

Any other advice is very much appreciated.

Thanks,
bill

The post below is correct. Transmission and lift all seals can be replaced without splitting the tractor.

As others said, no gasket at that location. Most likely your main drive shaft or the transmission counter shaft seals are bad. Both can be replaced from under the tractor without splitting it apart.

Not trying to sound like a smart a$$, but you might spend a few dollars and get a ITT repair manual for your H. It will show you where the oil is coming from and show you how to build the tools to remove the lift-all. Well worth the money. If you are seeing oil between the clutch housing and the motor the most likley place is the lift-all gasket between the pump and oil tank, it could also be the rear main seal on the motor.

ITT manuals can be bought at some farm supply stores. If you want to buy authentic IH manuals, the best quality is from Binder Books.
