I have always used 30w oil in my SMTA. 30W has worked ok (in Central Texas). However, would Rotella T 15w40 that many diesels use the yearround work any better (or worse)?

If it starts easily during your relatively mild winters, stick with 30W. 15W-40 will work fine, just no advantage to it.

We have used Rotella 15W40 in every thing with very good results since my Dad bought our first Diesel a D6 cat in the 60's. A friend of mine found out the hard way that it would not work in a LP, when he burn't up a engine in a MM LP tractor

Well all I know a friend of mine who is a graduate of a Diesel School in Nashville was a mechanic at a Cat Tractor Dealer for 14 years before going to full time farming had a MM LP he kept on a farm where no one was LP so no one would steal the gas. I don't remember the details but he was taking it from the home farm to the second farm basicly tosted the engine after several tests, cks, and just plain bull sesions was advised the ash level in rotella was either to or to low for a LP engine. Sorry I don't remember all the details.

If you can, find out what the previous owner(s) have used in your tractor for motor oil. If they've all used 30W find out if it was non detergent or not. If not, stick with non detergent oil. If you use detergent oil in it, the cleaning action can break loose sludge and clog up oil passages. Rotella has lots of cleaning properties. I use it in all of my engines, big and small with good luck. However, when I get a new piece of equipment and I don't know the history of what oil was run in it, I pull of the valve cover or engine head and see what the inside looks like. Very gunky, use non detergent. If not, use Rotella with a little STP oil treatment. Engine will stay very clean and last a looooo nnnnn gggg time.
