Can't solve H miss

I can't seem to figure out why my H still has a miss. It has a very occasional miss at an idle but does most of the missing while under even the slightest of loads. I replaced the points condensor, dist cap, wires, plugs and rebuilt the carburetor. My next guess is the coil but I hate to keep throwing money at it with no results. Anyone have any ideas? How do you test a coil?

Just my 2 cents, but my little '49 Cub was missing and having problems with load etc...until finally after swapping out the poor non-metal core ignition wires, it ran great for about 30 min. and then the MAG COIL just gave up. No more spark, tried and checked everything. Today I wired in a 12V coil and ballast resister. Voila, spark about a mile long, and no more miss, and I mean none. I let it idle for at least 45 mins. and I tell you the sound was sweet. Sure picked up my mood too.

Reset the valves first. It is quick and easy. Solved a pretty bad miss I had in my SM. Search the archives for the instructions and clearances provided by the experts here previously. I have only done it once so i don't trust myself leading you thru it.

Run a compression check. You may have a sticking or burned valve.

I agree, that's the next place to look.

I agree, run a compression check. BTW where can one find an adapter to use an automotive type of compression gauge on the big fat tractor spark plug holes ? I checked at my local Napa dealer and the couldn't even order one. They can usually get me most wear parts and gaskets for my tractor too.

I guess I will make one by welding a nonfouler to the base of an old plug if I don't find one soon.

I bought mine at NAPA early this year, pulled it right off the shelf, came with adaptor.

I have a compression tester made by Sun and it has both sizes of threads built into it. Never even thought that some might have been built without both sizes. I have no idea if they still make them though. Rick

Kind of surprised that NAPA couldn't find one, the compression checker I have came with the adaptor, and it was an elcheapo model.
