We've been discussing the belly tanks under some 66 series toy tractors on another forum. I've never seen a real one. Any of you guys have any experience with or know anything about these tanks?

Can anyone post a photo of a real IH 66 series with the auxillary belly tanks?

Thanks,
Mitch

Had one of those tanks and liked it. It wasnt factory but a aftermarket. It was no problem changing hyd filters. It would let you run all day without any trips to the fuel barrel. As far as being vulnerable I would disagree. It was heavy gauge material for a fuel tank and I'm sure it withstand far more abust than the poly tanks on the magnums we use today. I cant believe I never poked a hole in a 86 series tank. Never did like the front tanks. Obstructed the air flow and caused the tractor balance to change more than I figured. Just my thoughts.

Mitch: I don;t think I would spend much money on one of these belly tanks. They are just light material. I think if you ever got stuck bad you would demolish the tank. I had an 8' piece of wood, had fallen off a truck going along the highway sometime during the growing season. Front tire of 1066 flipped it up and it went up between battery and housing of tractor with cab. Had that fuel tank been there it would have gone right through it. If you need the aux tank do like Pat.

I have an auxillary tank mounted on the front of my 1066 4x4 but like you I have never seen a real belly tank. Must have made it miserable to do simple things like changing hydraulic filters. Hows your little one doing? Ours just had a bout with strep throat but is doing fine now. Pat in Wisc.

Our little one is doing fine, Pat. Hope yours continues to be well.

How do like the 4x4 on the 1066?

Mitch

Like the 1066 real well, some problems with wheel hop on hard pulling chisle plow in the red clay and have to admit it is hard on fuel compared to the 806's we have.Hope harvest time treats you well. Pat

Pat: I notice in the posts between you and Mitch, you have a 1066 with 4x4. Just curious as to how you like it. I purchased a new 1066 in 1975, 2 wheel drive with duals. I always said if buying another tractor that size, I would go 4x4. Two things my 1066 did was beat the front end to bits and was awfully hard on brakes. Most of this of course happens on large tillage implements. The front drive should help that punishment of turning under load. I found the duals just made that turning problem worse, under load it just wanted to go straight ahead. I put the front end weight on and that just beat the wide front worse. I would think even in 2 wheel drive those 24" fronts would be a big improvement.

You mentioned 1066 being hard on fuel, and yes I found that also, great when fully loaded. Just takes some good hefty equipment to load a 1066.

With the 4x4 turning isn't a problem except for the wide turning radius of the Coleman front end. Haven't had any brake problems yet. You're right about the 24" front rubber helping with the front end taking a beating, this tractor rides so much smoother than a 2 wheel drive-but I must confess I do still like the 806's better. Pat: I somehow suspected you would say you liked the 806 better. 06 and 56 series had something that was lost with progress. I had a 1066 and a 656 and always found myself reserving 656 jobs for myself. Thanks for your thoughts.
