I've had my '79 484 for about 6 months. It's showing 3400 hrs on a working tractormeter.

I noted when I got it that after a few minutes running it starts blowing 'fumes' and dripping a bit of oil from the crakcase breather. After adding about 40 hrs doing mowing the fumes are the same, but the oil is now dripping faster at about 1 drip/second.

The fumes are not just water vapour as they smell oily hang around too long, but don't look like just oil smoke.

I'm planning on renewing the pistons/sleeves. Is there anyhting else I should be looking at?

The 484 is a 3 cylc 179 inch diesel. This is half of a 358 German diesel used in o88 and 3288 tractors and 1420 and 1620 combines. These motors need to be run hard and worked to eliminate slobbering. Also poor oil, poor previous maintenence, or poor or stale fuel would not help.Worn valve sleeves will also cause this condition. Before spending dollars on repairs, do a basic maintenence and work the unit to its maximum for 3 or 4 hours. A dyno would also serve. It is the nature of these German diesels to dribble and slobber when under light load. (155,179,206, 239, 246, 268, 310,358, and 402 inch motors.) You would know if it was only running on 2 cylinders.

Had the same problem with my ih484. Engine didn't skip or lose power and oil loss was small. Ran it that way for a year. Now I have oil running from exhaust manifold and blowing from muffler. Still no skip or lack of power. No oil in radiator or coolant in oil pan. You tell me.

You could be getting fuel in with the oil. If one cyl is dead, the fuel will just pour into the oil, thinning it and causing more to come out the breather. If it is diesel, you could have a bad injector that is causing one to be dead.

Hmmmmm. Could be - hadn't thought of that. Seems to be running on 3 cylinders OK though. Would that cause the fumes/smoke to be emitted from the breather though?

Does the crankcase oil level go down?
Smell the crankcase oil on the dipstick, is it thin and smell like Diesel fuel ?
If it smells like Diesel fuel and the crankcase oil is thin, then Diesel fuel could be leaking thru the front seal on the main drive of the Bosch injection pump. The excess Diesel fuel will mix with the crankcase oil and it will also evavorate out of the crankcase thru the breather.
Anothe indication of Diesel fuel leaking into the crankcase oil is very low oil pressure when engine is warm and idling.
If this is the problem the replacement seal is only about $10.

More serious problem could be broken compression rings.
Please lets us know what you find.

Good luck
JB

Hi guys,
Many thanks for the replies. JB - yes the oil level does go down....too fast for my liking! The dipstick oil doesn't seem particularly thin and smells of oil as far as I can tell.
One IH specialist told me that on these engines the injector seals can leak a small amount of water into the cylinders which may account for the crankcase fumes being quite watery (i.e. a bit like steam).

After 40 hours of mowing with an 8' finishing mower I think it's safe to say that the problem isn't due to lack of use/hard work..... especially as the problem looks like it's getting worse!

My plan of action is to install new sleeves/pistons and have the head checked for leaks. I was thinking about doing this myself with a friend who's pretty good mechanically (I'm not that experienced and nervous about this level of job), but I've had a price from a local ag. engineering co. which isn't out of the way, so I may let them do it. I also have some come-back against them if anything goes wrong!!

I'll let you know what the result is.

Hi Ted, my brother has a 454D witch is the 1970s version of a 484 and is has well over 10,000 hours on it and he never has to add a drop of oil between changes. So something is wrong. Since the oil level is going down and breather fuming.
This would appear to be caused by cylinder blow by which could be caused by broken ring(s) or
worn rings and sleeves. The other problem that can happen to this engine is if the fan belt brakes the engine will heat up very quickly, the antifreeze will boil and the pressure will blow the "O" ring seals on the bottom of the sleeves.
But this is not your problem as you would have antifreeze in the oil.
These engines are cheaper to rebuild as they only 3 cylinders and are easy to work on.

Please let us know the final fix.

Good luck
JB
