I am rebuilding my 1952 SM, found that the cylinder head, casting number 8060, is shot, multiple cracks. Contacted a parts place and was told they had 5 SM heads, all cracked.
The guy told me he had M heads which would bolt right up, numbers 8777,8790,6336 and 8574, the only one I could find was the 8574 and that looks like it was for an LP engine, was told I would lose a little compression, never miss it.
Does anyone have any information on these other heads or where I might find the correct one and is this a common problem for SM heads?
Thanks

The 8574 head was the replacement for the 8060. I have found that the 8574 head is less likely to crack of all of the M heads.

I have what the IH dealer called a recast head on my gas M for about 20 years. Keep anti freeze in it all year and have not had problems yet. Valve guides had shrunk due to the heat and needed to be reamed . I had the head magnifluxed and it shows cracks but it works fine.

Where are the cracks? and how bad? was the head leaking before you tore it down? As you said, you cannot find one that doesn't have cracks in it. Maybe the head you have won't give you any trouble, just the way it is.

Jerry, I don't know about M's. Last winter I went to do a head job on my H, it was cracked. I had a spare head in the garage and when we looked, it was cracked too. The local IH mechanic told me most of the Farmall heads he went to rebuild were cracked and he has been doing it for years. I never heard of it either. I finally found a good head, but it cost.
