I have a Farmall 100 that I would like to convert to 12vt system. What will I need to replace to convert it over? Can the starter be kept or do I need to get a 12 starter?

Kevin

Kevin: Ten years ago I changed my Farmalls Super A and 130 to alternator charging systems. Why, because I was fed up with that damn generator and regulator. I think I bought a bushel of those regulators.

Super A has a 6 volt alternator and battery which I installed new 10 years ago. Both are original. I have replaced the battery cables since.

130 has a 12 volt alternator and is now on it's third new battery and second new alternator.

Yes by all means I would convert to alternator but not 12 volt.

It is sort of silly to convert a 100 to 12v you must need neww cables and a good check-up of the starter. Remember you also have to change the bulbs, add a resistor to the coil change the leads on the ammeter and then probably will be back on this post with more problems. Easiest way would be check your current system and get it up to par.

You can use the original starter. If you are going to use the original coil, drop one of those old MOPAR resistors in series with the coil feed wire. You would need to ensure that your light bulbs are 12 volts. If you switch to an alternator, you would need to change from positive ground to negative ground. After doing that, you might want to reverse your ammeter leads.

BTW, if you decide to switch to an alternator, the Delco 10SI can be had quite inexpensively. If space is a problem, search your local junkyard for a Nippondenso out of an old mid-80's small Toyota. They are reliable alternators and about as easy to wire as a Delco.

had a dead 6v in the sm, a good 12v in a dead pickup, went to autozone and got a resistor for an 85 ram pickup, stuck it in the line opposite the one running up from the distributor base, hooked up the 12v and its charging around 10-15 amps over 1/2 throttle. Seems to me a 12v thats discharged is still going to put out more juice than a 6v, and all the components can balance out and run the voltage they're happy at. And if its all happy, i'm happy. Plus, electric motors, such as the starter, fall victim to low voltage faster than high voltage due to excess heat.

Why? If your six volt system is in good shape it will start the tractor every time. Use some heavy duty battery cables, at least 0 guage, and save yourself some money.
