Durring my lunch break today I ran down to Home Depot for some rotary wire brushes for my super A rebuild project. On the way out of the store I noticed a JD lawn tractor for sale. My eyes almost fell out of my head when I saw the sticker!Try abour $4000! I guess Im a little out of touch with prices. This tractor was nothing special that I could see! For that price you could buy a real tractor fully restored.

Scotty. You have drawn a lot of commentary on your obsevation. Mowing grass has always been a time consuming job. There were the push mowers, then the ride ons that in a wind turn you green with grass stains. I guess one could go to a big money jobie with cab and air. Then you would just have to work harder to pay for it.

A Mr Willard Ervin of Stewiake, Nova Scotia, Canada trained his driving horse in the 1920s to pick the grass around the house, what we normally call the lawn, not eat the flowers and ornamentals, not go on the road and make his manure and urine out behind the barn. Now that, my friends is an efficient lawn mower. I doubt that going on the road was much of a concern in the 1920s, given the speed of autos of the day. Another plus being when a horse eats the grass there will be no weeds.

I tend to look at it a little differently than some... for $4000 I could buy roughly 4 of the $1,000 mowers, or pay someone to mow for quite some time while I watched. However some are willing to pay or they would not build them. Their biggest market probably is the guy with a city lot that could easily be push mowed in an hour every week.

You haven't seen my yard. Takes me 2-2 1/2 hours to mow my yard with my front mount 48 inch deck. I also have 100 + trees I mow around in the windbreaks on either side of my yard. Maybe 35000 sq ft. I have to mow every 5 days or I have to bale it. Every 5 days from April through October. Do the math and that's 42 times. Have no idea what it costs to pay someone to mow a yard, I wouldn't do it for less than $100. Pay some kid $50 every 5 days and $4000 is gone in 2 years.

Just a note to all that posted. In no way was I knocking JD, its just that mower was in front of the store when I walked by. I bought a new Wheel Horse in 1982 and have used it for over 20 years. A lot of my neighbors bought Sears Craftsmen mowers and have long since replaced them once or twice. I really was amazed at where the prices have gone, I quess thats the bottom line.

Yep, I got a wheel horse around twenty years ago, still have it. Use it on the the farm, in four ft tall grass sometimes, mow around the sweet corn patch to put up the electric fence. We also run an auger in an 18 ft grain bin with it. Still running, one of the best buys I've ever had. It wasn't cheap for back then, but most of what I've done has been general maintainence. That thing takes a lot of abuse. So I think you get what you pay for.

I can top that! Our H D had one this spring that was over $12,000. 3 cylinder diesel engine, power steering, 54 inch deck, 3 point hitch, etc. As to the $4000, that is what it costs for a good mower. Go with the cheap ones and you'll be looking again in 3 or 4 years if you are doing any mowing to speak of. I do admit though that the JDs seem a bit over priced. You can go to Lowe's and get a Cub Cadet, but I think the prices are similar.

I am a natural born cheepskape but get along fine without the expensive stuff. Bought my MTD from Lowes for $600 (it was a buyback from someone who was not satisfied with it. Turned out to have bent blade) and if I can get one more cutting from it will have 5 years service on 2 acre lawn with only a few sets of blades, 2 batteries and 1 belt replaced. I say you often do not get what you pay for but you pay for what you get.

Haas did not intend to reply to you but under main topic. By the way the Cub Cadets at Lowes are built by MTD they are heavier and better built than typical MTD though.

I bought the cheap green one at home depot although the price is admittedly ridiculous, if you price around you will find that they are not way over the price of a typical MTD mower and they did appear to be a little better constructed(powdercoated deck, Plastic hood won't rust, heavier front axle...etc) hold it don't go buy one yet. We were having troubles starting it just after we got it...it acted like a dead spot in the starter...so we phoned HD and asked them about the waranty they sent us to John Deere They ended up replacing the Briggs & Stratten because there was some sort of flaw in the design of the decompression system no problem they fixed me right up just after that the sidewall blew out of the front tire...back to John Deere we go.... no problem once again they fix us up just as I would expect a Good Company like John Deere would do.
Now with all this great service some of you might not see why I would have any reason to be upset...Like I told the Guy at the Shop if I wanted to run around chasing lawnmower parts and comming home to my grass that should have been cut when my my lawnmower was down I would have kept my 8 year old craftsmen.
It's worked real good since we got those first glitches fixed....would I buy another one? Ask me in 8 years

IfIH still made lawn tractors they would cost as much. Deere seems to be a little higher on their lawn tractors than the competion. I bought a JD F525 front mount mower for about $5300 in 1996, costs about $5800 now. This is a dedicated mower, not a lawn tractor. The larger JD's cost $8000 +. That sounds like a lot, but you will probably never need another mower. Home Depot also sells lawn tractor's that have the Deere name on them for about $2000, I call these "throw aways", light construction much like Walmart. Yes you can buy a farmall tractor for that much, but those are not tractors you would want to mow your lawn with. This is not a commercial for Deere, but although Case-IH sells quality mowers (other brands, not Case-IH), they are expensive also.

Yep, $4000 for a little toy, For $4000 you could buy a restored old tractor or for $5000 you can easily buy a new 4-wheeler. Those little tractors at Home Depot make me laugh. By the way for well under a $1000 you can buy a good condition used lawn tractor, built heavy duty and last longer than the home depot stuff.

I went shopping for my next lawn mower and came home with a J.D. 425. Yes it was expensive but I feel it will be the last mower I will have to buy. This thing is built like a truck and makes cutting the grass almost enjoyable. You get what you pay for and if you decide to sell it in a few years it is still worth alot of money. No I am not a rich Yuppie just a common factory worker. My 2 cents worth!

I'd like to have a new lawn mower, but I refuse to pay that kind of money for one, or even spend $2000 for one that will be worn out in 4 years.

I'd like to build my own zero turn mower and 60 inch deck in a couple years or sooner.
