Can anyone provide me with a wiring diagram of the back of the rotary light switch under the ameter gauge? My tractor's had a lot of the wires cut off and I am wanting to see how things hook up. My tractor has been converted to 12V neg ground. I just bought a rebuilt GM alternator with internal regulator (one wire connection) to replace the one that was on the tractor and want to be sure it's hooked up right. I understand the one wire goes to the battery, probably through the ameter so it can register flow direction (charge or discharge). I cannot read what is on the front of the ameter panel that IDs the switch positions cause it's all faded. What connects where?????

Hookup the ammeter like this:

- One terminal to the battery + cable at the starter switch.

- The other ammeter terminal gets everything else - the wire running to the alternator BAT terminal, the wire feeding the ignition switch and the wire feeding the light switch.

When you are finished if the ammeter reads backward - i.e. it indicates "charge" when the lights or ignition are on and the engine is stopped - simply swap the wires on both ammeter terminals.

Punch below for a backside view of the wiring for the later (3 position) light switch. The early (4 position) light switch is similar but with an extra resistor and terminal for the generator field - that is left unconnected with an alternator.

Good luck!

Bob, Your diagrams are so helpful, especially when used against the IH wiring diagram. Having said that, do you know why that sometimes its necessary to reverse the wiring on the amp gauge? I had to do that on my 52 H, even tho I followed the diagram exactly. Is it that some of the gauges are wrong from the factory? Just curious, and don't mean to confuse the original question.

Originally your "H" was wired for 6 volt,Positive ground, so the wires would be backwards when changed over to 12 volt negitive ground. I remember in my younger days of hooking up a charger and charging an old battery backwards. When the tractor did fire up the battery gauge said the generator was discharging all the time. Ended up in re-placeing the battery anyway.

I will jump in here also, and say a big thank you to Bob, those diagrams bailed me out when I was trying to return my 40 H to the original charging system. The wiring diagram in the I.H. manual is the same as worthless.

Do you by chance have an operator's manuel? Wiring for stock M is in there. Believe there is a wiring description for alternator conversion in Articles section here, written by Bob M and is very complete

Sorry, super Ms didn't have Live PTO. Some had Live Hydraulics, some didn't. Just info, not a flame. JimN
