Well I poked around where I shouldn't have. I was working on the wireing on my 450 which required removeing the coweling, well I cleaned out the years of accumlated grease and grime and put it all back togeather. Now here is where I run into trouble, I knew there was a hyd. leak under the dash, but I didn't know how bad it was. Under a full load (the blower) oil covered the entire right side of the tractor, I guess the grease was holding it in. My question is how hard is it to replace all of the gaskets on the hyds.

I have owned a 400 for 5 years and tolerated the same hyd leaks for that long. I am now into a major overhaul of the tactor and have torn apart all three valves. I intend to buy all o-rings and gaskets for each valve, plus the rings and gaskets for the emergency relief valve. Three other gaskets are needed: two on top of the hyd. tank and one on top of the valve-mounting post where the steering support sits. Also on the back of the post is a metal blow-out plug that I know is leaking and needs replaced. There are 18 additional o-rings that go between all valves and end plates. Laslty, larger o-rings are needed for all supply lines. Quite a list of stuff to buy.

I took my brothers 400 and I replaced every o-ring in the hydraulic valves. This is the only sure way to get rid of all of them. It does take someone who has the ability to take things apart and put them back together to do thus. Also, you need to buy about 50 dollars worth of o-rings from Case IH. I am willing to do these hydraulic valves for people if they wanted to ship them. Then all you would have to do is get the orings that go between the valves accurately installed to be rid of all your leaks.

I do not have a 450, but I have a 300 row crop which is similar. I have been chasing leaks too in that same area. If you already have the dash and cowel off, the rest of the work is pretty easy. Just remove the control rod assembly, and then remove the four large nuts on the right side of the valve bank and slide each valve assy off. O-rings are used in between the valve assys.

Other areas check for leaks would be:

1. the rear output lines.
2. the supply lines to the reservoir-o-ring ports.
3. oil pressure gage line- mine was leaking.

Hope you have better luck than me, these hydraulic leaks are driving me crazy. I am about ready to replace all the steel lines with new custom built ones this winter.. at least the engine doesn't leak oil..

Is there a dye I could add to the hydrualic oil to find the pin hole leaks in the steel lines?

Adam,

I look forward to some favorable advice to your post. Since I am experiencing major leaking from the middle touch control valve on my 450, it will be helpful to both of us.

Tom
