IHC 300 Utility PTO

I have recently picked up a 1956 IHC 300 Utility. Unfortunately, this tractor is not equipped with PTO. It is my understanding that both "dependent" and "independent" PTO were offered on these tractors. I am interested finding out more information about how I might get PTO for the tractor (IPTO would be preferred for the obvious reasons). Does anyone know what a modification like this might involve? Assuming that I could actually find an IPTO unit, could it be as easy as a bolt-on addition? Does the output shaft to drive the PTO actually exist behind the cover plate I have currently (I have yet to check). Or, would I have to deal with more difficult transmission issues? Also, is anyone familiar with parts interchangeability w.r.t. IPTO units. Do I have to find a Utility-based unit? I have seen similar IPTO units on utility and row-crop tractors (with slightly different actuating levers). Any and all information would be appreciated.

I bought a 300 Utility w/front loader and no pto. I wanted to use it with a bush hog so I found a Farmall 300 at the same tracter trader for parts. The motors are verry different but the rears are about the same(look exact). The pto. from the farmall bolted rite up on the utility with little more dificulty than that plate. There is a spot inside the rear (look with a flashlite from the center of the hole where the plate was. Up front you well see the input shaft is set up to accept a pto) The shaft for the pto. shaft to interspline with(slips rite in). My pto. is actuated by a lever on the outside back housing where that plate was. just look for a tracter with similar looking rear with that 6 bolt pattern on the back of the rear. Its more trouble to draine the oil out of the rear and replace it than to install that pto.(literaly). any way good luck from one 300 U owner to another. By the way, how did you know yours was a 56. I dont know the exact year of mine but heard theres a way to tell from the numbers if its a 55 or 56. If you or some body else could post the answer id greatly aprreciate it. Once again, Good luck.

Best way to go about it is to buy a parts book for a 300 from binder books dot com. That will "out-line" what parts you need. If your tractor has the Torque Amplifier housing, it will be set up for the live pto parts. You may have to split the tractor at the clutch housing to install the parts for the pto drive. Either way, parts are cheap, and your labor is free.

Dwight: I read your and Dick's post this morning. At the time I thought what src. is saying now would work. Transmission driven pto, I know it's not as good as IPTO. I am not even sure he is correct, but it is worth checking out. The other item I would check out is a pto from an H. It has been a long time, but a neighbor of mine had a 300 with Transmission driven pto and it looked very similar to the H pto. It's worth checking out, those H take off will be quite reasonable.

I faced the same dilemma as you some time ago.
If you could find one of the transmission driven
type pto's, I believe it would go in. As near as
I can tell, the 300's that came through without
pto's would accept this type without major clutch
alterations. The independant type, which is much
more common, requires changing other internal parts. Finding a trans. driven pto may be difficult. I have seen a few, but they are not
real common.

Your question gets asked fairly often here, so apparently a lot of 300Us were sold without PTO. According to the parts manual, the transmission for the non-PTO version lacked the drive gears for the PTO, so you've probably got a pretty major transmission adventure ahead of you if you want to add PTO to your present tractor - it would probably be much more cost effective just to sell it and get another tractor which already has PTO. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
