Super M pricing and questions

Looking at a Super M and have some questions.

(Please forgive any incorrect terms, I'm an old farm boy needing an acreage tractor.)

Specifics:
Super M serial SM F-49219 J
- narrow front (quite wobbly w/ lots of steering wheel play)
- live hydraulics (factory)
- aftermarket power steering (belt drive, L side)
- 3 point hitch(light weight)
- drawbar mounted on rear axle
- 12 volt conversion, new battery
- no lights
- crappy loader w/ blade, no bucket
- small seep in radiator - no water/antifreeze in engine oil
- no engine oil leaks, no blue smoke, starts good
- might be missing, hard to tell
- new rear tires, good front tires
- sheet metal dented and dinged
- clutch, brakes and all gears work

Main uses: snow removal, light dirt work, sickle bar mower.

Questions:
Is it worth $1500? They were asking $2100 to start with. Not going to use that loader, think I have another to put on it.

How hard is it to fix the front wheel wobble?

Can the power steering leak be fixed or are parts impossible to come by? Its not a hose leak.

What can you use the 3 point for? It was so flimsy looking and the pin holes were quite small.

What does a 3 way valve assembly cost roughly? Wanting to have up and down pressure for loader, bucket and possibly the 3 point or other attachment.

Anything else I should have checked?

Thanks!

Thanks for all the help folks. Drove it the 35 miles home today. It ran pretty hot (200-240 degrees) but never boiled over. Up hills it sounded like a 2 cyl JD but never had to shift out of 5th.

At a fast idle it wasn't missing so hoping its a timing/wiring/carb issue. After an oil change and tune-up she should be much better (fingers crossed). Then on to the wheel wobble, the power steering may not be leaking as much as I originally thought.

I have seen some gears in the steering pot that only have teeth half way around. My 350 had teeth all the away around so i just pulled it off the shaft and spun it around to the side that wasn't worn. That took care of my wobble. Adam

When you only see a half of a gear in the steering pot it means it has been replaced and the factory ones were a whole gear

I make no claim of being an expert, but have bought and sold a number of Super M's over the years. It has been a long time since I have seen any Super M with live hydraulics sell for less that $1750.00. in any sort of a running condition. At $1500.00, if worse came to worst, you could part that tractor out and make money. Just a short running total....Tires-$500.00..... Power steering-$350.00..... .3 pt-$350.00....Live hydraulics-$350.00. This leaves quite a bit left to sell to turn a profit. HTH, Rick

A few thoughts on the steering:

Steering wobble - If the cause is worn pivot shaft bushings, $50 in parts and few hours time to R/R the front end will cure it. However if the problem's worn gears in the steering pot, parts (new worm and gear) will run several hundred $.

PS leak - You didn't mention whether it's got Charlynn or Behlen steering. If Charlynn check is the hose manifold block at the steering motor. Often this works loose and leaks LOTS of oil. Tightening the two cap screws holding the manifold block in place, and maybe replacing the two O-rings underneath will fix it. However if the motor is leaking internally the only fix is to replace it ($300 - $400).

Incidentally if the PS is Charlynn check the spline coupling at the front (output) end of the PS motor for radial play. If any is evident it will contribute to steering wobble. Figure $80 for a new coupling.

Regarding the price, if the tractor indeed has new rear tires, these alone are easily worth $600+ as rusty suggests. And if the engine miss is simple (fouled plug, loose wire, etc) the fix is easy and cheap. So $1,500 for that Super M as is may be close to a fair price.

As far as front wheel wobble, every Farmall I've been on has had front wobble. Not to say that it's normal, but it was never that great of a problem and we lived with it. For the power steering leak, you should be able to find any seal or o-ring that you need. I don't think 1500 is a bad price if it runs good.

You mentioned that the tractor has new rear tires, A pair of new rear tires will set you back about $600. So, subtract the $600 from the asking price of $1500, and that leaves a price of $900 for a super M that basically runs good, with a loader, and a three point hitch.(even if you don't use it, you can sell it.) Taking all of this into consideration, I don't think $1500 is too far off.

$1500 doesn`t buy much in a SM but doesn`t sound as if this tractor is much. Good tin is very important. Fixing the front bolster is a pain. Power steering is nice if it works. I prefer spending a little more and getting a better machine. Your time has value also.

I don't want to start any arguments here, but good tin is important only depending on his intended use of the tractor. If he's planning to restore and/or show it as an "antique"(which it is), then yes, good tin can be a huge bonus. If he's buying it for a tractor to use to actually do "tractor work" with(which it sounds like since he's planning on replacing the loader), sub-par tin won't make any difference other than being something he can use to haggle the price down. LOTS of the M's an H's that are truly still being "used" in this part of the country dont have ANY original tin on them at all(other than the gas tank of course). I know my grandad always took the hoods and grills off and stashed them in the shop since they "held heat in" and made it harder to work on the tractors. Luckily for me, when the tractors were traded in, that straight old tin was left hanging from a nail on the wall of the shop, along with other "unneccesary" things like factory lights, pto sheilds, etc. etc. :).
