Farmall 230 Missing

I recently bought a 1957 Farmall 230,It runs pretty well except it does not have much power. I was showing it to my father in law, who is a Ford man and he said he thought it was missing. To test this I decided to take each of the spark plug wires loose to see if I could tell anything. When I removed the wire from 1 and 2 you could hear it miss, but I could not hear a bit of difference removing 3 or 4. I checked and I could not see spark on the plugs so, I ran down to the auto parts store and got a new set of wires, sparkplugs, rotor and distributor cap. I popped them on and no change, except now I can see that the plugs are firing. It seems to be getting pretty good compression on both of the cylinders, and I know the Carb needs to be rebuilt. My question is could 3&4 still be firing? One other test. It will run with 3&4 disconnected but not with 1&2 off. Any suggestions? Please do not underestimate my ignorance. My father was a mechanic but I got his ears instead of his mechanical ability.

My 230 is officially now running on all 4 cylinders. My original comment about not overestimating my ignorance was right on target. I had the it wired to fire 1432, instead of 1342. Great lesson learned! Thanks to everyone for your help!

Have you had time to find the problem? curiosity is killing me. I had the same symptoms on a 674 but I was trying to finish hauling my hay and was in to much rush to remember what did when I had time to work on it. At least thats my story.

You may have seen it in the main post, but I managed to reverse 3 & 4. I changed the wires around and it now runs great. Thanks!

Had the same problem w/Super A-took the plugs out & found that #'s 3 & 4 were fouled up big time. Bad wiring could cause them not to fire & then they'd foul up. Try changing the plugs, too. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Quick.. squirt some oil around 3 and 4 intake gasket and see if is sucked in. this is quick and easy and you can confirm or eleminate before going on to all the rest. This is and old timer test and I forgot it until there was nothing else to do.

Marvin: Like the others I agree your problems are still probably ignition. I have three of these little Farmalls and I find the only good place to buy ignition parts is at CaseIH. I have tried a few auto parts items over the years and always found myself replacing the part prematurely. I know CaseIH are a bit more expensive, but it works for me. I wouldn't say I gave this much of a test as I only ever bought a couple of items at auto parts stores and have always had easy access to CaseIH.

I have an A and a SMTA that both do the same thing.I was stumped too. Changed spark plugs and it got better for a while and then it started again. Possibly a hotter spark plug is needed? That is what I am going to try.

It's common to have it spark when you pull the plug but not when it's inside the cylinder under pressure. It'd say keep working on the ignition: points and condensor. And double check that the wires for 3 and 4 aren't reversed.

You might want to remove the valve cover and see if all of the valves are opening and closing properly, and while you are in there, get out the feeler guages and check the clearance.
