Generator Super A

I've been having charging problems on my super A. I put a volt meter the Bat. side of my voltage regulator and it showed approximately 6.5 volts. The gauge however is showing no charge. I know the gauge works cause when I put the lights on I see the draw. I took the generator off, looked at the brushes, they "appear" fine, looks of meat, all touch with the spring force, the rotar looked clean as well. Suggestions ?

Brian: Did you try with tractor running removing output wires from generator and hooking volt meter directly to generator? The reason I say unhook wires is so you know the voltage is or is not coming from battery. Your voltage regulator could be the problem. Another item you could try is removing battery cables with tractor running. I did this with 140 and right after I got tractor last Nov it would run with battery cables off. As winter progressed I had it going a few times and it got to point that least little disturbance it would quit. Finally it wouldn't stay running at all. So that generator was on it's last leg so to speak, when I got tractor.

As you know I replaced the generator with an alternator and my problems were not over, nor did it work right until I replaced the ampmeter guage. I know my generator was not working, however since replacing ampmeter guage, I am still not sure about regulator. Looking at the wiring mess these guys had on tractor I imagion whole system was toast.

Thanks for the response hugh. What should the reading be if I have the volter directly on the generator. Furthermore, when you say hook up to the generator, where exactly ? I know there are two posts, do I put it there ? or ground and to one of those posts ?

Brian: Hook it to the two terminals on generator. Since you will be by passing regulator reading should be up above 8-9 volts may be even higher. If your not getting at least 6 volts it will not work. Mine wouldn't even light a test light, in the end.
