Looking to buy a 186. What are the pros and cons? What should I be aware of?

It really depends on what you want to do. Say you are going to be doing PTO work, like running a forage harvester with a 3-row corn head. 186 Hydro would run circles around a 1086, because you can change ground speed without changing engine speed. However, when it comes time to do tillage work, 1086 will run circles around the Hydro. Hydro's cannot put as much horsepower to the ground as a mechanical transimission can, because the hydro uses fluid to transmit the power. For the same reason, Hydro's are not as fuel efficient. I can find the horsepower-hour per gallon numbers for the 186 and post them. Also, the Hydro transmission is very expensive to overhaul.
