Oiling Problem

I just completed a Rebuild of the C113 motor in my 1945 BN. After I warmed the motor up for the first time (And I must say the old girl really ran well)I pulled the valve cover back off to make sure the valves were set correctly. What I found it that very very little oil was getting to the rocker shaft. Most of the oil is leaking from the area were the head and the stand off meet. Question I have is there a gasket that goes in this area or something else to seal this area off so that oil is directed up and into the rocker shaft

Kevin,
I ran into this same problem yesterday.
The oil was coming up around the stud.
As TDK mentioned in his post, I also had put a lock washer on the stud when I bolted the stud back on. The lock washer was allowing the oil to come up around the stud instead of going into the rockers.
I also made a thin gasket for under the post out of a very thin piece of gasket material just to insure that it sealed against the head and then reassembled with out the lock washer.

Kevin,
I've been thinking a little about seeing if I can find a copper washer at the parts store, or making one out of a soft piece of tubing to put under the nut that holds the rocker post down, since mine wants to leak around the top of the stud.

Just an idea that might help you also.

Gary

As Parts Man said, the center stud of the three that holds the rocker assembly is drilled so that oil comes up through the bottom of it and goes out the side into the rocker shaft. Hole must be turned correctly and of course must be there. I tried to get this stud from my IH dealer and he said was no longer available. I had to get one at an Auto Parts dealer and then drill in myself.

Kevin, I don't remember a gasket being there. Did you change the stud that holds the center rockershaft mount? That stud is hollow and carries the oil to the rockers. Check the bottom surface of it to see that there are no cracks and that it is flat.

Have seen people add a lock washer to these studs, parts book does'nt show any washers here.If lock washer is put on center stud oil will leak through gap in washer, resulting in little or most likely no oil getting to rocker arms.

Kevin did you install new cam bearings? You have to make sure the cam bearing holes line up with holes in the block. In the design an oil hole coming from the center main bearing enters the hole going through the cam up to the hole leading to the rocker arm assemble. These holes line up just once every cam rotation so just a pulse of oil is delivered to the top each rovolution. When I was rebuilding my C113 engine I found the cam bearing holes and block holes didn't line up so I had to elongate the bearing holes until they did or no oil would have gotten to the top. I don't know this was a goof on just this bearing or more got out there.

There are no Cam bearings in the motor.

Mine was an earlier C113 engine and used removable cam bearings p/n 24420D, 24515D and 24516D. Do they just run the camshaft in the machined bores of the cast iron block? If so then your problem is probably as was said involving the center bolt.

Yes the cam rides in machined bores of the block. Tore the rocker shaft off and found that the head has problems were the stud screws into the head. Going to use some JB weld to fill in the missing areas of cast iron and then put it back together with the rocker shaft turned to the correct position. Also going to make new mounting studs today and see if it fixes the problem.
