The last 3or4 times I wanted to use my 48 H I had to re-adjust the points. When it failed to start each time,I would remove the dist. cap and the points were set at .050 to.060.Everything seems to tight and clean. When I set them back to .020 it starts good. What is causing them to move? Like I say,They are tight even when set wrong.

Had the same thing a couple of years ago w/my '44 H, w/distrib. Found out that the bushings in the distrib were shot. $170 (+/-) later, after a rebuild, it starts & runs like a top. Has way more power, too. Might want to check that out. My shaft would move as much as 1/4" up & down. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Sounds to me like the points are getting set when they are closed or partially closed. Points are suppose to be set when fully open. Make sure the points are sitting on top of one of the shaft lobes when setting them. If not on top of a lobe, the setting will be in-accurate right from the start. That might not be it, but maybe something you are overlooking.

Thanks for the quick replies,I'm setting them on top of the lobe like I should be, but is there a bushing in the dist.that could be worn or could the shaft be bent? It is an IHC dist. I don't think anyone is fooling with me,but there are some that might. Thanks IRI.

Now i think i have heard of everything , The only time i have evr seen points get out of adjustment is when someone forget to put some grease on the tab and the tab wears and the points close up. Ya sure that someone isn't funnen ya.

sounds to me like the bushings are shot like the other guy said. Take it out and rebuild it. Make sure the shaft ain't bent.

I looked at it a little closer when I got home this afternoon and there is alot of side to side movement.Where might I find a rebuild kit for this? NAPA or my IH dealer or is this something an automotive machine shop should do? IRI.

It's hard, nowadays to find a shop that will re-bush a distributor. You might want to check with your CNH dealer to see if bushings are available, and they should not be too tough to install, if you can get them. I don't know about these, but some need to be finish-reamed after installation.

A local electric motor repair shop might be able to do that, if needed.

The other problem you may run into is bad wear in the advance mechanism in the distributor. I don't know what parts are still available for the advance, and if you find that in tough shape, it might be best to look for a rebuilt distributor.
