Starter- Copper wire disconnected...

My starter wasn't working at all on my Farmall 450 gas -ground. So I took it apart and found the thin flat copper wire that connects to the bolt was disconnected(the copper-colored bolt that sticks outside of the starter and has the wire that goes directly to the solinoid.) I've tried getting it to stick back to the bolt using JB weld putty (but it didn't allow the electricity to flow through the putty). After scraping that off, I tried a 40/60 rosin core solder but couldn't get it to hold the copper wire to the bolt (it just didn't seem strong enough).

I don't know much about these, any ideas on a quick + easy way to fix this?

Matt - I ran into the same problem with the starter on my SH. Tried unsuccessfully soldering with a solder gun, then with an old-time solder iron. Simply could not get the darned button and copper strip hot enough to flow solder. Finally out of frustration I took the starter frame to my local alternator shop. For $20 they installed a new stud/button and insulating washer, then neatly soldered the field leads to the button.

The starter now works great - it was $20 well spent!

To get it hot enough to solder you need an old-fashioned "soldering copper" that you heat with a torch, and then apply the hot "copper" to the connection at the stud. It must be clean and have flux applied. After the JB incident, it may take some careful scaping and wirebrushing to get it clean enough to solder. For pictures of a soldering copper go to:

P.S. ... have a wet rag ready to cool the copper stud from the outside, to prevent damaging the phenolic insulation washers between the stud and the starter belly.
