I was born and rasied Green. How ever lately I have been influenced by Red. Since I know very little about red tractors and I wanna get into restoration b/c of a 856 with personal value to me I have some questions. Like did the 856 come with a turbo? Which engines are good? Do the rear ends have some noise to them? Where do I look for tags on them?, and where they a good overall tractor even though I have heard of T/A nightmares! I was very young when i ran the tractor and only 23 now. I live on a 80 acre farm in Ohio.I was wondering if I would ever wanna farm rather than being a auto/truck mechanic would that be enough horse. Thanks to anyone who might take the time to respond

We have two 856's, and one we bought new. Holds 16,000 strong hours right now. Has had a clutch and two or three TA's, but for a long time it was the main tractor on a 300 acre dairy farm. Took a lot of abuse. Engine/rear end never touched. Has been on the roller mill filling silo the last week. Hey, still has original IH muffler, too. Lots of power. The other one we bought a few years back was a little abused, still has lots of power with 10,000 hours. Awesome tractors, I've never heard anybody, even green guys, talk bad about them. Good luck, I know what personal significance can have on a tractor.

856 was probably the best tractor IH ever built. No turbo from the factory, but many have the aftermarket M&W turbo kit. It has the D-407 engine, definetly the longest lasting engine IH ever built, mabey a little expensive to overhaul, but you get what you pay for with that one. What kind of rear end noise does it have? Any noise in reverse means that someone got it into gear and Park at the same time and knocked a tooth off of reverse gear. That's fairly common. Other than that, the rear end should be pretty quiet. The serial/model number tag is located on the left side of the clutch housing. The TA's are not as troublesome as the other JD guys would have you belive. Case-IH offers a very good warranty on their new TA. 856 has 100 horsepower, definetly enough to be the big tractor on an 80 acre farm.

The 856 is an all around great tractor. We have 2 of them. One with a 1256 turbo set up and one with out. Out of all of our seven diesel tractors the 856 is the ones I would rather drive. I also have a 4020 jd with turbo that just cant handle what the 8's can do. Why farm alittle green when you can FARMALL.

I have 2 856's. THey are great tractors!! 856 was rated at 100 HP. I haven't had any torque problems. The shifting linkage is much better then it's predicesor...the 806. Good all around tractor!!

H: I have owned 16 farmalls in my farming days, most of them bought new or less than 1,500 hours and while I never had an 856, having monitored this forum now close to 4 years, I would have to say 856 is without question the toughest tractor IH ever built. Some of them now have close to 25,000 to 30,000 hours on them. Not a lot of tractors any color ever see that kind of use or hours of use. Most of the problems with TA were operator problems not TA problems. Get a set of manuals. The mid 50s on into the 60 spelled the end of reading the manual if all else fails.

I would think you want to farm. I started out mechanicing like you are then decided if I was going to fix stuff for other people to break that I might as well break it myself; But guess what? My stuff don't break down! Just start out small, rent some ground and don't buy a lot of green iron and get in debt. Depending on where you are some livestock can help pay the bills. Cows have been good to me.

I went from a 4020 to a 826 and like it much better. It is so much easier to work on. 856 is also a good horse, maybe even a little better than a 826. They didn't have a turbo from the factory but it was a common add on. If you want a turbo from the factory you'll need a 12 or 1456.
