bill,

I havent't found the orginal post -- but beyond that ----

If there has been some kind of mini disaster, check ONE rod / cap bearing first. If you see stripes or worn away parts, or silver color with copper colored stripes through them -- then you have a problem which was probably caused by insufficent oil getting to that part -- and logically all other rod bearings and may even the main bearings.

If the rod bearing looks clean -- that is, it is mostly gray and has no deep stripes across it - then something else was your problem.

Always remember that your should use new rod bolts everytime you check a rod bearing -- and you're going to have to do all that stuff with the gasket and sealing on the oil pan as well.

If you're near a rebuilt point, the egg shaped properties of the rod journals on the crank will tell you that you're going to soon need to pull the crank and get it re-machined. You can measure that by plastigage or a dial caliper.

Bill,
In order to properly check your main and rod bearings you need to have the engine removed from the tractor and mounted in an engine stand. After mounting in the engine stand the engin neds to be turned upside down( oil pan side up) you will need to remove the rod and main bearing caps and use (plastigauge to check the clearences) For the amount of work that is involved in checking the clearences, you should go ahead and have your crankshaft machied by a machine shop, and install oversize bearings. I am not sure if you are having bottom end engine noise or if your question is in checking clearences on a rebuild that you are doing. If you need some more specific information drop me an e-mail at (mirgon@ohiohills.com) and I will try to help you with some more specific information, I will walk you through it if you need help.

You don't need to have an engine out of a tractor to plasti-gauge the mains and rods unless you afraid of a little dripping oil. Just pull the pan and start at it. Also if you can get a micrometer and check the crank for roundness on the rods it would be an advantage. What tractor is it? Some tractors have .002 undersized bearings available. Also be careful not to loosen up all your mains at once. This can take out you crankshaft main seals.

might i add in checking mains that unless you jack up the crankshaft to get the weight off the bearing you will get a errionous readings .

And make sure you only check one at a time, I've had to fix too many with swapped main or rod caps :( Remember that these assy's (either rods or mains) are machined as a pair and the caps are not interchangeable. If you are experiencing any oil pressure problems and it is possible that anyone has worked on your motor in the past, I would check for swapped caps first. The mains aren't marked, check for obvious loosness in the crank (pull on fan belt, and gently pry up on ring gear), the rods should be stamped with matching position numbers on one side of the rod.
