Is there a way to tell if a regulator is 6 volt or 12 volt if it isn't stamped on the bottom of the case? Thanks for any help.

Bob M Once again, Thanks you for the great explanation. This was a yard sale regulator, new in an International Harvester box. $2.00. Unbelievable deal. I even told the guy it was worth quite a bit more. He said "not to me". Thanks again and enjoy your Fall season in Upper state New York. It must be beautiful as is Northern Vermont.

Sure thing Bart! One bit of warning: Voltage regulators have a current limit function in them. Thus the regulator should be matched to the current capability of the generator. If you install a regulator with the current limit too low, there will be no problem - other than the generator will never develop it's maximum output. However if the regulator's current limit is too high, you run the risk of overloading (and possibly burning out...) the generator under heavy electrical load conditions.

BTW - It's nice here in Western NY, but nothing matches the beauty of the VT mountains this time of year! ...Bob M

Bob M Thanks for the heads up. I'll tread lightly. That's more new information to me. Of course just about any info is new to me. Have a goodun. Dick in Vermont

Bart - here's a couple suggestions...

1 - Peek under the regulator cover. If there's only 2 relays inside it will be a 6 volt unit. If you find 3 relays, the regulator can be either 6 or 12 volt.

2 - If you have a variable voltage DC power supply, remove the regulator cover then do this: Connect one power supply lead (doesn't matter which one...) to the GEN terminal and ground the other on the regulator base. Now watch the cutout relay (it's the one whose contacts are held OPEN by spring pressure) while you slowly increase the power supply voltage starting at 0 volts. If the relay contacts close at about 7 volts you have a 6 volt regulator. And if it closes around 14 volts, the regulator is for 12 volts.

3 - Don't have a variable DC supply? Then feed 12 volts from a car battery to the GEN and regulator frame as above. If the cutout relay closes it's a 6 volt regulator; if the cutout doesn't close it's 12 volt.
