Can anyone verify that some 1954 SMTA's came with the Fast Hitch option? If so any idea how many were built and from what serial number? Was it the large pronged type like the 400 ,450 etc or small pronged like the Super C?

Thanks for any info
Bud

IH in fact offered a kit to add Fast Hitch to Super MTAs after the fact.

Bud: None of them had fast hitch from the factory, and the only fast hitch that will fit are from the 450 or 560. The 400 hitch will not fit as castings on SMTA were not drilled for it.

Hugh
I read somewhere that a number of prototype SMTA's were made with Fast Hitch and shipped to different areas of the country for evaluation. I thought it possible that those tractors may still be out there?

Bud: When it comes to IH I guess one should never say never. If you look at why the SMTA was ever built it doesn't make sence. I think they were pushed by the demand for live PTO and had some Farmall SM sheet metal to use up. Same thing occured with Super A, they built Super A1 which was really a 100 with Super A sheet metal. You will find guys who claim those came with fast hitch. If you look at A versus SA thread just before this one IH was anything but consistant.

The SUper MTA made a lot of sense when you look at IH's philosophy at the time. They were phasing in changes, trying to promote the idea of planned obsolecence. The Super MTA changes, particularaly the live PTO, was something they needed for quite some time. WHen looking backwards, it's easy to point out that they should have skipped models, but IH didn't work backwards!
