Gear Reduction Starters

I have been thinking of putting gear reduction starters on my pulling tractors, but they are just a little expensive. I was wandering if there is any way that I could make a gear reduction out of a regular starter? If so, what would be involved and where could I get parts?

Thanks for any info.

Had an automotive diesel with a gear reduction starter. Thing was constant problem. Finally resorted to regular HD starter, and got along fine. Not sure why you feel a reduction starter is necessary, but suggest you check with a local backyard rebuilder. Maybe you can substitute a larger, heavy duty starter with minimal fuss.

If you're running 6volts, can you change to 12volts? You can run same starter, have lots more kick, just don't crank too long.

Got room to mount a 2nd standard starter on the opposite side of the block?

I've seen a few large Detroit and Cummins stationary diesels set up like this from the factory...

NAPA made a special bendex rot the 656 gas at one time was supose to help in starting the tractor but you can not shange one gear with the other and they would not last long. So the starter gear has to be the same gear as came with the tractor.

It might be cheaper to buy a used gear reduction starter from a junk yard. Then all you need is a couple chunks of aluminum, an a bridgeport or other suitable mill to machine an adaptor.

It can be done cheaply if you wait long enough and find the parts and have access to a machine shop. Sorry if this post is not much help.
