I have not been on this board much this summer. I started a project to put a motor in my 1/2 ton 86 silverado that I thought I could get done on my two weeks vacation. Ha!My truck I bought new back in 86 and I'm very attacthed to. But the 305 cu. was ok on the flat ground but anyone who has ever gone through South West MO knows there is no flat ground.I bought my Uncles old 75 farm truck and pulled the motor "a small block 400" and rebuilt it and dropped it into my little truck. I had the new motor up and running in June but found out right away It had a bad overheating problem. Come to find out the machine shop forgot to drill the 1/8 inch steam holes in the heads that are a must. Took motor back down. Hurt back, had surgery on back, got 2nd set of heads, Machine shop drilled holes too large and left a broken bit in the bottom of one hole, They had to buy me a 3rd set of heads and I had a different place drill them. With a friends help had it back together and running in two nights. Oh baby it ain't a 305 any more! Sorry this is not tractor related but it is my tractor hauler. Got plenty of power now but still must keep in mind it's still just a 1/2 ton. But man what an improvement.Needsless to say my two week project turned into most of the summer.

Nice work Paul. Man I would have been spitting nails at the machine shop.

Nice pix Paul!!

Reminds me a bit of project a neighbor did to his Chevy C10. Swapped a tired 250 auto for an IHC 348(?) + 4 speed manual from a rotted out Travelall. That old Chevy suddenly had a whole lotta spunk - though it also had a hard time passing a gas pump afterward...

It would've been a 345. I bet it did wake that chevy up!

Scout II 345 4speed, travelall 392 auto,

I have only about 250 miles on it now so I have not checked the mileage yet. Thought I would give it a chance to break in a little. I gotta tell you though on my old 305 I was getting around 10-12 in town and not much better on the highway so I don't imagine I'll be much worse off.

Paul,

I hear ya on the 400. Why GM ever discontinued that engine is beyond me...what a puller!

I have somewhat the twin sister to your old truck. It is now on it's 8th motor, 5th trany, 2nd transfer case and 3rd set of differentials.

It has upwards of 600,000 miles on it and will be going in for it's third paint job at the end of this year.

At present, it is all '95 running gear, but I still miss the torque of that old 400; a definite 50 hp increase.

Later,

Allan

I did the same swap on a 84 a few years ago, that baby would haul the bananas!! Swap ya in some 3/4-ton spring packs and you'll be set.
