Need ideas for top link on 400.

I purchased 2 3pt arms for my 400 today. Pretty useless with out the top link.
I sat out there looking at the rear end of my 400 trying to get my mind around the top link.
Ive got a couple of ideas that have to do with making a bracket.
What are you guys doing for a top link?

Heres some pics of the one I made for a 300. Your 400 looks to be about the same design. had to turn the cylinder around so the ports are on the rear side of the tractor for clearance.

Thats kind of what I had in mind only my Idea was alot more flimsy. like TP I hadent thought about turning the cylinder.
I have more than enough flat steel laying around so I should be able to replicate this.
The only problem I ever have is my drilled holes never match up right.

I have the same problem too. Thats why a built a prototype out of wood first. Then when building it out of steel, I cut and drilled everthing first. Put the pieces on the tractor and tack welded it. Took it off and finished welding. Did it in short segments to keep distortion to a minimum. If I remember right, I had to drill one hole in the fast hitch. That would be the lower bolt hole on the left side. I drilled that last, during installation using the hole in bracket as a guide.

I gotta tell you, I would have never thought of flopping the cylinder to get the room to do that..... ..... ..... .I think I got to take some measurements and make something like that!!!!! !!!!

Very, Very good design!!!!! !(It is simple and strong, I like it!)

Kelly, I have started this same topic over at Red Power and had the guys talk about it until they were blue in the face and I still don't have a design that would work 100% of the time. I wanted to use our 400 with our 3pt 4-38 cultivator but couldn't figure out a top link bracket. One of the guys suggested that he had a bracket that bolted on the pto housing and came up, it was then strenghted to the the top deck with long hunks of iron..... ...Well, that would probably work, but I don't like the idear of the PTO taking the abuse. I still haven't decided what to do yet..... ..... .Probably will built one of the U shape 2 to 3pt conversions..... .

TP: I think you will find it quite hard to find one conversion to suit all and any 3 point equipment you come to. The industry claims 3 point is standardized. Someone should remind them the top link position on implements still seems to have a lot of variations. With the newer fergie type configured tractors this can be compensated.

If you want to make some good money design an economical kit to move the operator ahead on those old American built row crops and install a new drawbar and 3 point. Problem is it would be worth nore than the tractor. Tractor also would no longer be authentic.

Kelly: I think Red has the best solution. what most of these guys are missing is the fact Farmall 300 and 400 don't have an exposed rockshaft. My brother has what is called a pickup 3 point adapter for his tractor. It is same as Red's adapter except it has a U shaped hook on all three points, that each have latches. You just back in until all pins are in the U then snap the latches.

I wouldn't perminately change those big inplements to 2 point as you will buy a 656 sometime.

656 huh? YA think. My wife has that same worry. SHe just does not know what to call the next tractor I get. She just knows I will come up with some lame reason that I just had to have it.

My rock shaft has what looks like acast bracket on it I thought that is where the top link fasten.This is on a 300u. looks like the top link hook up on my John Deere.

Kelly on my 560 it has a place for a top link on the bar that raises the 2 pt arms right in the center. It is made out of angle iron and is welded to the round shaft. I haven't tried it out yet (it was there when I bought the tractor along with the 2pt to 3pt arms) but looks well used. Brian

Kelly, does your 400 have a 2 point? If it does it is a lot easier to convert your 3 point equipment to 2 point. The ease and safety of hooking up to 2 point equipment is well worth the time and expense of converting equipment to 2 point. IH made a 2 point to 3 point adapter. I have found 7 of them and permanently attached them to my 3 point equipment.

One of my projects is a 350U with the two point Fast Hitch lower lift arms. The tractor came with two 'extention arms' that slip into the sockets of the lower arms. They have the swivel ball on the outer end. It seems that the tractor can have a 2 point lift or be converted to 3 point lift, rather than converting 3 point equipment to 2 point. It would be more economical. Has anyone seen this setup?
I think there is some sort of top link bracket (maybe home made) on top of the differential. (The tractor is not nearby)). If no top link bracket was available from the factory, how would 3 point equipment be used with the extention arms? Was a top link casting available only for certain 2 point models?
I've not seen any 3 point to 2 point parts in my area (Ca).

You can buy a top link that bolts onto the arms of the top rockshaft. I don't know where you can buy one but I have seen them in salvage yards. I'm sure someone will kknow where to buy a new one.

I have one of those. Bad part is my 400 rc does not have a exposed rock shaft nor the pre drilled holes.
