Stuck Clutch Or?

I posted before about an IH 240 that could not be put in gear with the engine running. Well, I bought the tractor without starting it, but first I tried all 4 gears by rocking the tractor, clutch out, and the fan moved each time. Next in neutral, I rocked it and got no fan movement. While winching it up to the back of the trailer, I put it in 4th gear and the tires dug in the ground for 3-4 feet. Put it in neutral and loaded it. After unloading I clamped the clutch down, put it in gear and rocked it. There was no fan movement in any gear. Do you think the "engine off to put in gear" (stuck clutch) problem was fixed by dragging in 4th? Or could I still have a tranny problem? I went to change oil and filter before starting
and found two filter gaskets. The bottom one has turned into stone and I've spent 1/2 hour getting 1/4 of it out. It's probably been there 30 years.

The same thing happened on my M. Some times it would work and sometimes it would not work. My problem was that the spring compression fingers on the pressure plate were worn down. The clutch pedel had been adjusted all the way out. Replaced the clutch, pressure plate and bearings.

Did you have the clutch pedal depressed when you dragged it in 4th? That would break a stuck clutch disk loose. Other than a stuck disk, there isn't too much else that would cause the problem of not being able to put it in gear with the engine running, if it works fine now. Ajust clutch pedal free travel and remove the inspection cover from the bottom of the clutch housing, just to see if everything looks normal, and you should be ready to go. Have fun digging out the oil filter o-ring, I've been there too. Getting a brand new one in there sure makes a difference. Good luck with the 240, they're great. Is yours a Row-Crop or a Utility?

I had no way to hold the clutch in when I dragged it as I was alone and the seller was not at home. If that's the only way to unstick the clutch, maybe I still have a problem, although with the clutch in now, rocking the tractor in gear does not move the fan. I have the International 240 utility.

It would appear that dragging it broke the clutch free. When you are ready to crank the engine with the starter, leave the ignition switch off, with tractor in 4th and clutch depressed crank the engine with the started a few revolutions to see if the rear wheels roll forward or not. If it does not roll then the clutch must be unstuck. But the first time you attempt to start it make sure it is in neutral.

I am not sure if the 240 was the same pilot bearing (bronze bushing) as the SC or not but when we owned a SC the pilot bearing would always
sieze onto the the transmission drive shaft about every 3 years. Our SC had a front end loader and dad did a lot of loader work for other farmers so the clutch was well used.

Good luck with your 240
