450 Farmall Thermostat

The thermostat in my 450 Farmall Gas was stuck open. Removed to inspect and change. Was not expecting to find 2 paths for the water flow. How is the water supposed to flow between the thermostat and the radiator? Is there supposed to be any flow of water into the top of the radiator when the engine is started cold?

I appreciate any help.

Jimmy's right. Not sure why, but the thermostat housing designed to flow a small amount of coolant to the radiator even when the thermostat is closed. Makes it's difficult to get the engine temp up into the "run" range cold weather and light load. In cold weather I use a winter front covering the grille on both my SH and SM so the motors can get up to temperature.

Do you locate the temp sensor here or directly into the head connection or is there another better place? The hose comes from a block heater on the other side. I really dont need the heater. I leave the tractor parked in real cold weather anyway.

Jimmy - Your setup there will probably indicate temperature OK. However it'll be slow to respond to a sudden overheating situation (like should the fan belt break or the thermostat stick shut). If you don't use the block heater I'd take that tee and stuff off and screw the temp gage bulb directly into the head.

However if you want to keep the heater you might do this: Remove the tee and nipple from the head. Take a close (short) nipple, screw it into the head, then screw one of the run outlets of the tee onto the close nipple. Then screw the temp gage bulb into the other run outlet, and the heater hose into the side outlet of the tee. That'll get a portion of the gage bulb into the block where can more quickly sense temperature changes.

It should screw directly into the head.

Yes they were designed to let some water flow all the time.
