Guys - Have a 1935 F-20. I understand that the left hand front side of the clutch housing has a hole/port to view the timing mark on the front side of the flywheel. I have seen it. Looking thru the hole (which is a challenge in itself), as #1 piston comes up to TDC, I do not see any marks anywhere on the flywheel, but do see about a 1/2" diameter hole in the flywheel, in line with the viewing port, about where the a mark should be. There appear to be no other holes in the flywheel that line up with this port. Is this my timing mark? If not, what am I looking for?

Also, the manual says the cross pin in the front of the crankshaft where the starting crank engages to should be horizontal when the engine is at TDC. Viewing the pistons when the head was off, the pin is 10-15 degrees off. Is the manual a rough guide here, was this hole for the pin that accurately put in, or do I have another problem here ?

Thanx guys !

the mark is there but it is very hard to see. use something in the spark plug hole to find TDC. you can roll it back and forth and tell pretty close, then look again for your mark or else just go "by guess and by golly".

Pete,
I just got my grandfather's 1936 F-20 running after a 5-year restoration. The first time she moved under her own power for 35 years. It was a GREAT day. I know what you are talking about on the hole and flywheel, but I have indicators stamped into the face of the flywheel. When I had the flywheel out, I wire-brushed it and painted the face silver to show the marks. I can easily see the DC mark, along with EO, EI, etc marks. You may have to run a pressure washer through the hole to see the marks. They may be covered in grease or rust. They will not be directly in the center of the view port, but close to the pointer/pin. I believe there are some holes in the flywheel but these don't mean anything. As for the crank pin, the manual may be refering to the actual pin in the nose of the crankshaft, not the starting crank. My starting crank setup is quite loose and worn from many years, and may not be the best indicator of engine position. Let me know if I can help further.
