I recently posted an IH power unit For Sale on the yt board only to have 2 E-Mails from these European dealers wanting to know if they can send me a certified check for way more than the item and wanting me to send them the difference. Anyone have an idea what they are trying to pull? Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Andy

As George C. Scott said in "The Flim-Flam Man," "Only a dishonest man gets flim-flammed."

I got one recently not related to selling anything. It was from a female name on the email but claimed that she needed help transferring a inherited fortune to America to hide it from non christian family that would use it for un-Godly things. "She" claimed to be dying soon from a terminal illness and needed an account number to transfer 12 million to and wanted a promise I would give the money to a charity to be later named. I guess it is some peoples full time job to figure out how to steal. Funny thing is, if they got an honest job, they could probably make more and have much less worry.

KX: I receive one of those twice a month. Wanting help to get a fortune out of some bannana republic. I guess they figure we have money KX, since we don't sell anything. Don' know about you but they are barking up the wrong tree here.

Hi Hugh, yeah they are definately barking up the wrong tree here too. Times are hard as I remember, making far less than in the last decade before the economy bust. But....I am still plugging along and doing it honest, not trying to crack capers and schemes like these punks. I guess that is why it irks me so bad.

This is a world wide problem. Read the info on the linked page to find out the real deal. They are supposedly from europe, but are not. I have had these emails from them for all sorts of stuff I had for sale, including stuff on ebay. The latest one was for a motorcycle I was selling for $12,000. They offered a check for $96,000 and I was to transfer the rest to their bank account. Can you imagine that? I would not live long enough to pay that back to the bank.

Andy: If your selling anything and someone asks for your check that isn't a sale. You best ignore the guy. Best to reserve your check writing for buying transactions only.

Its a scam! Delete the emails and don't respond to them. It started with some enterprizing folks in South Africa and apparantly they met with some success as now the offers are coming from all over. They send you a so called certified check that is NO GOOD and have you send them your hard earned "Difference" amount and are left hold worthless paper that won't clear the bank. I even had an offer to buy something from me that I've never owned or advertised and couldn't hit the delete button fast enought. Their Cons!

I propose a contest. See who can collect the most phony money orders from these clowns. It'll cost them some amount of money to make the check and mail it to you. And waste their time.

Unfortunately, you have to give them your name and address to do it. And you never know if one will turn up on your doorstep. Unless it's a PO box.

Very little chance that they are going to jump on an airplane to pay you a visit. But if they did it would be the perfect time to have them arrested. One of the reasons the scam is hard to stop is that they are committing it from overseas.
