Guys - - Having troubles with my 1935 F-20 restoration project and several folks have indicated valve timing could be off. Looking for information from a good service/shop manual that would specifically tell when valves are supposed to open/close. Have checked the timing gear marks and don't feel they're right, according to the interaction of the valves and pistons that we observed.

Also - what's the probability of a twisted crank in an engine like this ?

Will be anxiously awaiting your input !

Pete

you did not say if you had the engine apart. Plese check and make sure your valves are not stuck open.

The timing gears are supposed to be match-marked on an F-20, but if you don't want to go to the trouble of taking the front cover off, here's a simple way to tell. As the piston in any cylinder passes top dead center going from the exhaust stroke to the intake stroke, the valves should rock and overlap just as the piston crosses top dead center. This is true on any internal combustion engine -- or it at least should be close enough for the engine to run correctly.
