300 U A Fair Value?

I need a little advice. Looking at a '55 300 U for $1,800; Not three point or TA, engine reputedly rebuilt, in frame, recently. Does show new head nuts, head gasket, and newer manifold. Runs smooth, hot oil pressure slightly above half way up gauge, the one cylinder I checked had compression of 145 lbs. Seems to run rich, plug pretty black. Some dings in hood, not badly beat, a little oil at rear seal junction, left axle seal leaks, as does the right, but less. Tires good, but checked(rear). Steering tight, no gear noise, clock works, showing 1015 hours(probably one flip over?) Has the GMC/ballast resistor 12 volt conversion, no three point. Seller will include a new three point conversion including cylinder for another $550. Can get a large pull behind mower, in good shape, very heavy duty for $200...total of $2550 for the package...what do you think?

Thanks for all the responses, guys. Seems that around here, southern Michigan, tractor prices are high and getting higher. This 300 is about the only one I've seen which is in line with my 2002 tractor price guide. I see lower prices in the archives, three of four years ago, but they don/t seem to be current.

If it's in sound shape, you may have trouble finding a more versatile and RUGGED tractor for that money. We had one of those equipped as you described. It was our loader tractor and sometimes used for field work for 20 years. It was nearly indestructible! If you ever use it for heavy loader work, check and re-tighten the bolts on the steering box occasionally. If you put it in a hay field, do not have extra drawbar pins in the left side of the drawbar. They can catch hay when crossing a windrow and bunch it around the exhaust pipe, with a potential fire hazard. That happened to us once, and we rerouted the exhaust upward.

Sounds fair to me. I assume you mean it has fast-hitch, but not 3-point? If it doesn't have fast-hitch, I'd take about 300-500 off. Well, that's not entirely true. For me, if it didn't have a fast-hitch, I'd wait for another tractor to come along.

Thanks for the quick response, big fred. The tractor doesn't have any hitch, just a drawbar. It does apparently have IPTO; after reviewing the archives, at least it does have the long lever with the button on the right side.
