Howdy, folks. Do any of you have experience or knowledge of the A-151 disc plow? There's one up the road here I'm thinking about buying and I'd like to know what y'all think of them. This one looks to be complete. I'd be pulling it with my Super A. Our soil is pretty good here, though it is a bit dense with some clay and the occasional rock starting at about 20". Do you guys think this would be a good plow for us?

I have an old single bottom plow from a J.D. L/LA sitting in my barn yard, but I just can't bring myself to cut or weld on it. Seems like a shame to do something like that to a perfectly good old, original plow. So, I'm looking to buy a real Farmall plow instead. Who knows-- maybe I'll find an L or LA I can afford one day. Yeah, yeah, I know-- I'm a softy.

Thanks for all the past help, guys.
Darren

I have spent many hrs. pulling the A-151 2 disc plow, in dirt with very few rocks it will plow 8 to 10 inches deep. People on this site will try to tell you the scrapers on the disc are not importion but they are. Scrapers that are adj. right will throw the dirt so work down is a lot easier. As another post said blocked up good and a little practice you can drop the draw bar and mount it in under an hr. the lift rod that goes to the touch control arm is spring loaded need to be straight and free so when you hit a rock it will flex.

Darren, I assume your talking about the 2 disc plow. I don't know the proper IH part#, but I think I've got the right one in mind. It is alot of trouble to hook up unless you get the hang of it with a few tricks(blocking it up, etc.) Don't pay too much for it though. They can be bought at a reasonable price.I live in Cleveland,Tn. and know where another one is pretty cheap.I have a Super A as well and have the same plow.

Gav,
Cleveland is a nice place-- I've been there once or twice, and driven through more times than I care to count. We're in a little town called Flintville, near Fayetteville. I've been trying to get an idea of what to offer for that plow-- can you give me an idea of what kind of price you'd be considering if you were in my place? For that matter, do you know what other folks are asking for the same model plow in your neck of the woods?

Thanks (from right here in the Volunteer State), Darren

Darren,
I was just in your neck of the woods last Sunday. My dad lives in Huntland.I know where one is and the guy wants $75 for it which I thought was a little high since it only fits Super A's (as far as I know).I never offered him less because I already have one, but I bet he would take less.Mine has a regular tube tire with wheel weights. Most of them have a cast wheel/weight combo.I call mine a road plow, since I can go between fields with it.I don't know the proper part# or name for any of the IH equipment I have other than recalling A151 being associated with my plow, but I would think there were less made with the tire on them because most people say they had wheel/weight combo.I get over to Huntland every month and a half or so.One of my sisters lives in Columbia.I grew up in Hendersonville.

Gav,
It's a small world! My wife was raised in White House and went to school in Hendersonville. I bought my Super A in Portland, which I think is a little north of White House and Hendersonvile.

Is the fellow you know that's selling one of these located near you in the Cleveland area or closer to us in this area? That's about what I'd hoped to pay for a good plow, but I don't want to spend half a day hauling to pick one up. I'm going to go talk with this fellow here locally today.

If you ever get over our way and want to stop by to meet, let me know and I'll be glad to give you directions.

Thanks again,
Darren

Darren,
The plow I am referring to is close to me just over the Georgia line.It would be a relatively long trip for a $75 plow.

Gav,
I was pretty sure that was what you had meant. (You're right-- gas is too expensive these days for a fellow to drive that far for just a plow.) Thanks for all the help though-- I really appreciate it.

Take care,
Darren

I used to plow with one of those when I was a boy in Missouri. It always worked fine. However, it is quite a bit of trouble to mount it on the tractor. I recall that it bolts in where the draw bar is bolted to the final drives, same as a lot of other mounted implements for the Super A.

they are good if you have good soil but here in Missouri they aren't worth a thing but we have 10 lbs of rock for every lbs of soil

I have live in SW Mo. all of my 61 years and 11 mons. Disc plows were used from the time my Granddad bought the regular until we started using offset plows, chisel plows, and auto reset bottom plows. Had a HM150 on an H later a M and A-151 we plow 150 to 200 acres a year in these rocks and worked better then any thing there was then. Also still have a 3 disc fast hitch plow. Last time I plowed any big fields used it on a 400D use it in garden now. We have all those rocks you were talking about , and then some.
