44 H was running fine, have installed new overhaul kit, went to start and backfired hard enough to push oil from air cleaner into jar on precleaner. Now it turns over fan and distributor but something is not engaging. Reading archives I suspect I have sheared cam gears or key. Any other ideas? Thanks

Thanks for your replys but my overhaul that included new clutch, ring gear, head redone has been over 1 year with no problems until this backfire incendent. Tractor spins over to freely as something is not engaging.

Jim,

Does it sound like it has the spark plugs removed when you crank? A "no compression" sound?

If so, I think you are on the right track; this condition would never let the valves close on the upstroke.

Does your tractor have a magneto?? If you had the mag off or just the front part off to replace points, etc. you may have it 180 degrees out of time. To correct, take the front cover off (the one that give access to the points) and rotate the distributor rotor 1/2 turn and put it back on. If the time is out 180 degrees, it will blow air cleaner oil back out of the intake due to back fires.

you may have a camshaft that was installed 180 degrees out of time, which would cause the same thing. Or you could also just have the timing off.

Justin,

I really hate to be a nay-sayer and certainly am not trying to argue with you, but you cannot install a camshaft 180 degrees out of time. It just simply cannot be done. It is an absolute impossibility.

You can install it out of time, yes (the marks not aligning), but if both of the alignment marks are correct, then the camshaft will always be in time with the crank.

Think about it. The cam, along with the distributor, rotates at exactly 1/2 that of crankshaft speed...this means that it will always be right, but only every other rotation will be on the compression stroke; the other rotation will be on the exhaust stroke (Basic 4 cycle 101).

Now, the distributor can be plugged in anywhere against that cam drive gear; therefore, if we are out of time and the camshaft alignment marks match with the crankshaft alignment marks, then the problem is with the distributor timing. The distributor may be 180 degrees out of time (or more/or less) to the proper stroke.

See what I mean? 180 degrees is just the other stroke, is all.

The distributor has to be properly timed to the camshaft as well as to the proper stroke.
