H Belly Pump Question

Hello everyone,

I have developed an oil leak at the drive shaft of the belly pump on my 1944 H. It has the two collars with cotter pins drive shaft system, so getting it out of the tractor was no problem. My question is, how do you get that little drive cog off of the shaft to change the seal? I can't seem to figure any way to do it, there just isn't room to get much on it to work with. Any input will be most appreciated.

Adam,
The drive cog is threaded on to a stud. put the tractor into gear and use a flat bar or pipe wrench to remove the drive cog. i have replaced this seal many times in H's. you can get it at any Napa store.

Ryan,

Thanks for the info. I was hoping that was not a press fit, but how would I hold the pump still while trying to unthread it? The seal that is bad is the one on the pump itself, not on the tractor. I took the pump off the reservior, but the gears are all sealed inside another unit. I didn't take it apart, as I was afraid it would not go back together. While it's apart, I think I'll replace the seals on the tractor too. You don't happen to have the Napa part number handy do you?

The I&T shop manual specifically says to stick a flat bar into the pump gears and use a shaft to turn the coupler off.

No need to disassemble the whole thing.

You'll have to open the pump up to replace that other seal. Get yourself a copy of the assembly in the parts catalog so you know how it goes back together. It's pretty simple once you have it apart. Plus you can clean out all that old oil sludge. Make sure you mark the pump gears so they mesh in the same spot when you reassmeble it.

http://ns2.genesis-technology.com/~kvp/ link to picture. Put a big breaker bar or whatever you have that fits in the slot (with the tractor in gear) and unscrew it.It might be kind of tight but should break loose ok. Remove and check the shaft where the seal has been riding, the old seal may have cut a groove in the shaft.If it has mine had enough room where the seal sits to put it in a different depth so the seal is not riding in the groove.
