Super A Starting Problem

I just tried to start my Super A which has been sitting for six weeks while I recovered from knee replacement surgery. I charged the battery (BTW, the tractor has been converted to 12v. by the previous owner), and tried to start it and nothing happened. Disconnected battery cables and wire-brushed them and battery posts, still no luck - the starter is not even clicking or groaning - I'm sure I'm not geting juice to it, but I don't know why. The wiring job has always been suspect - it is really jury-rigged and sloppy. I have taken a look at Bob M's wiring diagrams and am not sure which one to use to rewire my SA - I do not have a key ignition, just a magneto ignition system, the pull starter rod and the "Out to Run-In to Stop" switch. Anyone got any ideas???

Here's a link to Bob M's wiring diagrams:

Thanks to all who responded with advice. I'll be cleaning and wire brushing and installing at least new battery cables today. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

Check your ammeter. It is in series with your starter and if it opens, you won't have any voltage to your starter. I have had two of these rascals open up on me.

Just finished re-wiring my 54' Super A and it works great. I used the diagram published in the O.E.M. catalog.

It really is the same other than a resistor for the points. I assume you have a 12v generator or alternator and whether or not it is internally or externally regulated it is wired the same. 12v bulbs in your lights of course.

Mine has been converted to 12v, Steve, so the 6v. diagram won't work for me.

Red: I have never done a rewire with mag ign. While Bob's diagrams cover larger Farmalls in his description, just pick the H-M one for Mag Ign. It will work on the Super A.

How about where the cable connects to the pull switch on top of the starter?

Clean, bright and tight?

Might be the contacts inside the pull switch on top of the starter too.

It's not likely, but maybe your starter housing isn't grounding to the frame.....loosen one of the bolts that holds it on a little bit and then re-tighten.....you might also check where your ground cable from the battery is bolted to the tractor....maybe it needs cleaned.

The cables on top of the starter have been cleaned, but I will take apart the pull switch and check the ground cable - thanks, Gary.

Gary: Just to add to what you have said, ground cables on Super A's were always fastened to the dash standard. I have on all of my tractors made that cable long enough and hooked it one of the bolts of transmission top. I find with the ground going direct to a casting, trouble seems to be less common.

The starter switch on top of starter can be a source of grief. You can sand them off some but that only seems to work for a short while. Over the past 10 I have replaced those switches on all my tractors. Again less troublsome since.

Hugh, is that switch on top of the starter readily available (NAPA), or is it an IH part?

Red: The ones I have bought came from CaseIH, however I see them at NAPA and TSC. Probably all come from same source. If the originals lasted 40-50 years I doubt if it is a mass production business for anyone.

Try a known GOOD battery after removing the old one. In 6 weeks the old one could be dead. I recently had an experience with a 6 1/2 year old battery that worked fine untill I shut the engine off and tried to start it 3-4 minutes later. It read 12v on a meter, but when the key was turned, nothing happened. It almost killed the jump battery. The cables were cleaned, then starter was replaced. Still nothing even with a jump. I replaced the battery with a new one and the engine started instantly. I believe the battery would short out on heavy current draw.
