After reading Guy Fay's Data Book, I am still unclear whether IH matched serial and engine numbers on stage 2 Super H's. The ones on my tractor do not match. Does that mean there is a replacement motor? Thanks for your help.

I actually live in NC but my heart is in Alaska after visiting it many times. I wish I did live there.

Block & Chassis numbers on My Stage II SH are over 3000 numbers apart. And I KNOW It's the original engine.

no they won't match, the later the production the farther the spread between serial tag number and engine number- I'm guessing your motor number should be around 17718 or so. Please post back and let me know how close my guess is. Thanks Pat in Wisc

They are not supposed to match.

Thanks for your response. Today at a tractor show I was told that the numbers should match. I went to Guy Fay's book, which indicated that in some tractors they do match but not in all. Your answer makes me feel better about my tractor, although after all these years one could certainly expect the tractor to have had a replacement engine sometime.

Actually, most tractors won't have a replacement block- tractor engines are most frequently renewed by changing sleeves and pistons, leaving the block and the serial number intact. The most common causes of replacement blocks are catastrophic engine failure (rod through the block) or freeze cracking (not checking the anti-freeze). Sorry my book wasn't a little clearer.

Your book is probably clear, and my reading comprehension is probably faulty. Thanks for the response.
