Do restorers leave this alone as a piece of history, or somehow refurbish this. As the previous paint job was very sloppy, I want to clean it good, and make it look as good as possible....any ideas?

Thanks
Steve

I have a question related to this topic, all of my tags are shiney aluminum as the black is washed off. If I get a replacment tag, do the rivits come with it, and how do you change them without screwing them up?

I just restored my BN this summer, and I had the same problem. I used paint stripper, Dad's Easy Off, and it took it right off. The black is anodized aluminum, so the stripper shouldn't affect it.

Perhaps the older ones were more durable. Stripper/pressure washing removed the black from the one on my Super H, was going to replace it anyway.

You can get an exact duplicate of your tag from OEM Tractor Parts -800-283-2122 - about $25. Save your old tag as proof of the serial number. Then when you repaint your tractor, the tag will look as new as the tractor. Purists can disagree, but I see nothing wrong with this.

what you do is carfully scrape the paint off with your dull pocket knife. Then when you are ready to paint just coat the tag with grease.

1945 BN sn's start at 113218. 1946 sn's start at 146700. These tractors (Bs, BNs,) were made on the same assembly line as the A's. There was no rhyme or reason as to which one happened to be a B or BN. A serial nos. are the same as the Bs and BNs as far as the year of mfg.

It looks to be in pretty good shape. I would gently try to remove what I could of the sloppy paint from it, mask it off well if you plan on painting the tractor, then apply a good automotive cleaner/wax when finished. Usually one light coat and gently buffing up will make it look pretty good. Looks like some of the red is flaking now, so it may not be hard to remove most of it, just be careful to not remove the black.

Don't pressure wash it, or the black will come right off.

And sorry, NEVER use a knife or metal scraper of any kind on ID plates. I saw two of them screwed up as I watched. They were only covered with grease and dirt. Sometimes even household spray cleaner will remove the black background.
