OK, gang - I replaced both battery cables and all wiring, using all new connectors and cleaning all posts, washers and nuts. Still no joy. Tomorrow I will replace the battery with the one from my truck and see if that is the problem (even though it shows fully charged on the batt charger). I did not change out the push/pull switch or the switch on top of the starter and those will be next if the other battery does not do the trick. I will also clean the points, replace the plugs, plug wire, distributer cap and rotor.

Any other ideas on troubleshooting this little beast? Thanks in advance....

Rick: With the cables good, if the starter will not turn, has to be starter or battery. I ran across a battery this past spring, that while connected tractor would not turn over, even being boosted by another vehicle. Remove the cables and hook direct to booster cables and work finest kind. There had to be a bad short in that battery.

Try the truck battery, will tell you the answer. Still sounds to me as though starter switch, at least that is a first least cost fix. When you remove that switch, inside there are two plastic shields that look like odd shaped guitar picks, don't loose them.

sounds like it will be your saddle switch on the starter. have had this to happen more than once, you may be able to take it off and clean the contact point. by the way - what do the leaves look like around your area. wade

Hey, Wade! The leaves are either at peak or near it depending on who you listen to. But, IMHO, the colors are not as bright as last year when we had the 3-month drought. Maybe we had too much rain this year.

Bama, If I remember right...the problem was that the starter wouldn't spin or attempt to, so if that is the case, it pretty much has to be either your battery, cable connections to the starter and chassis of the traactor, the pull switch on top of the starter, or the starter itself.
I don't think your push/pull switch on the dash would have much to do with the starter not spinning....it should just be for providing juice to the coil.
Hang in there....you'll get her.

One other thing that I thought of....you might take a piece of wood or a hammer and peck the side of the starter a little.....maybe if one of your brushes inside the starter isn't making good contact, maybe a little jarring would help it.

You're memory is right, Gary. I'll try tapping the starter.

Sounds like you are on the right track. I assume you have checked for spark? (I apolgize if you said this in a previous message). Either use a timing light if you are fortunate to have one or just pull a plug wire off, hook it to a spare plug, and ground it to the frame and have someone watch while cranking it over. Has your timing jumped at all? (I have had that happen on older vehicles while they are running and then they just quit). Other than that, check your on/off switch, which you said you will do next anyway. This sounds like a good one. Good luck.
