I am having a lot of trouble with my M's PTO. It slips when under a heavy load. What can I do? Mine is the earily type with the flat plate on the outside. Is the later one any more dependible? Does the later one also use the two probes that mesh with the tranmission shaft or is it splined on both the PTO and transmission shaft?
Are the two interchangible?
Do any of you use your PTO?

David, I use mine on the sheller for about 4300 bushels a year & have also used it on the auger when emptying the bin (10,000 bushels). Never had a problem yet..Roger

David,

Are you hooked to a slip clutch?....I can't in my mind see how it could "slip".

Seems to me that it would either pull or it wouldn't pull.

Maybe slip is the wrong word. It disengages and engages. Sounds like gears slipping. When I pulled it out the notches were rounded and it was obvious what was happening.

My question is should I go back with the same style or change to the spline style.

Thanks

If just the pto is rounded you might get by with replacing that. There is also a snap ring that keeps the counter shaft from moving forward. That could have come out. You would be better off with the spline set up if you want to really use it quite hard.

The newer pto's are splined. The old notch in does not inter change with the splined set up. In order to go to the newer one you have to chang the counter shaft in the transmission. That is a major job. Yes, I use the pto on my M to run a sickle mower with no problems. It is a 1950 with splined pto.

I farm with 2 M's, a Super M, and a Super W-6. My one M is a1940 with the old style PTO and does the same thing yours does. The other tractors have the splined PTO and they are always doing all kinds of heavy PTO work with no problems at all. The later style PTO was much better!
