I just got my generator rebuilt and it works good well to good. At a idle it charges about 8to10 on the amp gauage. At WOT it has the Gauage PEGGED! On a volt it show about 8 volts at WOT.
What do you guys think? Thanks.

I think you probably need a new voltage regulator depending on your tractor. Hope this helps. SAm in NS

Thats new too. Can they be adjusted? I read someting about a 3rd brush adjustment? My Dad use to do all of this but times have changed. I'll check it out though. Thanks Shaggy

The stock generator shouldn't charge more than about 15 amp at WOT. More than that makes the generator run hot and can burn it out - will also boil your battery dry over time.

A new regulator shouldn't need to be adjusted. Also without the right instruments and tools a regulator is nearly impossible for the average mechanic to get it set right. I suggest this instead:

1 - Check to see make sure there's not a ground in the wiring between the generator F and regulator FLD terminals: Pull the wire off the FLD terminal at the regulator with the motor running at half throttle. If the wiring is good the ammeter should drop to 0 or show a slight discharge with the wire disconnected.

2 - If your generator has an adjustable 3rd brush (the last ones made did not) you can adjust it to lower the current output: Loosen the 3rd brush clamp screw a couple turns - it's on the back end of the generator near the oiler cup. Then carefully rotate the 3rd brush AWAY from it's neighbor. The farther the 3rd brush is from the fixed brush, the lower the generator's output. Finally retighten the clamp screw.

If these don't work, you probably have the wrong regulator - only cure is to swap it for the right one.

Good luck!

Check your regulator. If it has 3 coils and point sets in it it is a late model and can be adjusted. The voltage should be no more than 7.5 volts. This works on all 6 volt systems. The current portion of the regulater should be set for about 25 amps. This will give you a place to start fine tuning with a late model setup. Hope it helps. Walt
